00:00:06.528 --> 00:00:09.372
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:09.372 --> 00:00:11.256
I'm Devin Pintosi, your host.

00:00:11.256 --> 00:00:14.930
We are here at the Tennessee Council of Social Studies in Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

00:00:14.930 --> 00:00:21.870
We are here with Patrick Harry, who is with South Lincoln Middle School, also a K-8 school, I understand.

00:00:21.870 --> 00:00:22.070
Is that?

00:00:22.089 --> 00:00:22.190
right.

00:00:22.190 --> 00:00:22.791
Yes, sir, Pre-K-8.

00:00:22.791 --> 00:00:23.091
Pre-k-8.

00:00:23.091 --> 00:00:23.632
Yes, sir, Wonderful.

00:00:23.632 --> 00:00:24.454
So Patrick, tell me a littleK-8.

00:00:24.454 --> 00:00:24.754
Pre-k-8.

00:00:24.774 --> 00:00:25.736
Yes sir, wonderful.

00:00:25.736 --> 00:00:30.010
So, patrick, tell me a little bit about what brings you to TCSS today.

00:00:30.641 --> 00:00:32.287
Well, just with my content, I teach.

00:00:32.287 --> 00:00:36.851
I mean, I've been teaching history for 22 years now in Tennessee.

00:00:36.851 --> 00:00:41.424
Anyway, I just enjoy coming to the conference.

00:00:41.424 --> 00:00:45.713
I've not come consecutively in every year, but I do come every chance I get.

00:00:45.713 --> 00:00:58.185
I've been here a handful of times over the years but I do enjoy seeing the vendors and getting some good samples and maybe some of the latest stuff coming out material-wise and whatnot, using the classroom, and I'm just a big fan of that.

00:00:58.185 --> 00:00:59.408
I try to stay on top of things.

00:00:59.649 --> 00:01:01.140
That's wonderful, Patrick.

00:01:01.140 --> 00:01:04.126
Can you tell me a bit about what brought you into teaching?

00:01:04.668 --> 00:01:12.268
Well, just I think back to gosh elementary school days and when I was at age.

00:01:12.268 --> 00:01:18.430
Of course, just kind of, I guess at the time I just kind of had some good teachers around me, fifth grade mainly.

00:01:18.430 --> 00:01:39.164
You know all my teachers I can't take anything away from anybody in particular, but I just kind of the way they made me feel in the classroom, you know, you know, um, I just like to try to give back to the kids, I guess, today, to kind of give the same thing I was given when I was younger that's great, that is so wonderful.

00:01:39.465 --> 00:01:42.070
And can you tell the audience what you uh teach currently?

00:01:42.731 --> 00:01:43.340
oh yes, I'm sorry.

00:01:43.340 --> 00:01:48.388
I teach eighth grade US history and I also teach I'm new to eighth grade science.

00:01:48.388 --> 00:01:51.072
It's a first year teaching stuff.

00:01:51.072 --> 00:01:52.694
I feel like again but you know we're getting there.

00:01:52.694 --> 00:01:59.447
But I've been teaching 22 years now history and I get one year currently of science as well.

00:01:59.447 --> 00:02:00.209
So I do them both.

00:02:00.551 --> 00:02:02.341
Oh, that's wonderful and I understand.

00:02:02.341 --> 00:02:06.191
Occasionally you take groups of students out of the state.

00:02:06.519 --> 00:02:09.205
Yes, sir, we take COVID time.

00:02:09.205 --> 00:02:20.114
We kind of mess this up a little bit, but we had pretty much every couple years I try to take a group of folks parents and students 6th through 8th grade, if not sometimes older.

00:02:20.114 --> 00:02:26.312
Some of the high school kids sometimes reach out to me and we go to Washington DC and so on.

00:02:26.312 --> 00:02:28.187
So I actually have a trip planned for right now.

00:02:28.187 --> 00:02:35.991
We're going to be going obviously we're going to be spring break next week, but next spring break we're going to DC and also Gettysburg.

00:02:35.991 --> 00:02:37.284
That's something else I picked up.

00:02:37.284 --> 00:02:42.649
So that's something I enjoy being a part of as well and putting together and doing my part and so on like that.

00:02:42.649 --> 00:02:44.174
But I just kind of.

00:02:44.174 --> 00:02:46.100
I just enjoy that very much.

00:02:46.442 --> 00:02:49.573
That is wonderful, patrick, and can you tell me a bit?

00:02:49.573 --> 00:02:51.479
I understand you use ABC materials.

00:02:52.201 --> 00:02:57.272
I do At American Book Company in Woodstock, georgia, we are committed to your students success.

00:03:22.006 --> 00:03:23.753
Hope to hear from you soon.

00:03:23.753 --> 00:03:24.256
Bye, bye.

00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:36.729
I guess a few years ago, one of our assistant principals a few years back was kind of sharing about some materials and whatnot and I just kind of, you know, we all kind of adopted some.

00:03:36.729 --> 00:03:40.766
We picked up a sample or two and I love it.

00:03:40.766 --> 00:03:45.383
I mean, I've used the textbook over the years, sure, but ABC materials.

00:03:45.383 --> 00:03:50.003
Truthfully, I have been a big fan of A lot of my Google Slides.

00:03:50.003 --> 00:03:57.412
I make it comes from that content and I just like the way that it's covered and it addresses all the subject matter and whatnot.

00:03:57.412 --> 00:03:59.366
So I'm a big fan of it.

00:03:59.546 --> 00:04:00.128
That's great.

00:04:00.128 --> 00:04:02.867
Have you seen the students' scores improve?

00:04:02.867 --> 00:04:03.368
They have.

00:04:04.941 --> 00:04:05.924
I mean being a teacher.

00:04:05.924 --> 00:04:09.953
It would be great to have being top-notch every year.

00:04:09.953 --> 00:04:14.439
Unfortunately that doesn't happen, but some years are different than others.

00:04:14.439 --> 00:04:23.829
But pretty much since I've been using ABC materials, we've been pretty much I wouldn't say constant, but we have not, you know, we've been up to a decent level.

00:04:24.680 --> 00:04:25.824
Okay, that's wonderful.

00:04:25.846 --> 00:04:48.449
Yes, sir and Patrick, tell me a bit about new things that you're planning with your classroom or things that are bringing you here to TCSS that you want to share Just pretty much like I said, like I was kind of saying already, the fact of coming here and just seeing other materials definitely your materials and just seeing how it can be added to the classroom.

00:04:50.423 --> 00:05:09.970
I'll be honest with you, I'm a lecture teacher and I really get into what I do, but it would be nice to kind of, you know, I kind of need to stop sometimes and regroup and maybe do some more hands-on things in the classroom and, you know, primary sources or whatnot, and let the kids kind of come up with different things as well.

00:05:09.970 --> 00:05:13.733
So that's something I'm challenging myself with that.

00:05:13.733 --> 00:05:15.500
You know we can't do that every day, don't get me wrong.

00:05:15.500 --> 00:05:29.187
Um, but I would like to try to do that so that coming here kind of makes me, gives me some ideas and whatnot, and of all the latest, latest, I guess materials are out that we can use for things like that that's wonderful, pat Patrick.

00:05:29.206 --> 00:05:30.391
Yes, sir, all right.

00:05:30.391 --> 00:05:35.432
Well, this is Patrick Harry with South Lincoln Pre-K-8 School.

00:05:35.860 --> 00:05:39.848
We're so happy that you were able to come here and spend some time with us here at T-C-S-S.

00:05:39.848 --> 00:05:40.850
Yes, sir, thank you.

00:05:40.850 --> 00:05:42.233
Thank you now, bye, bye.
