When Students Become Teachers

What happens when a journalism major unexpectedly finds herself in the classroom? Julie Ortiz's teaching journey proves that sometimes the most rewarding careers find us rather than the other way around. Speaking from the ASCD-ISTE conference in San Antonio, Julie shares how education "wasn't even in my top ten" career choices before becoming her passionate profession for over two decades.

00:00:30.126 --> 00:00:32.252
Thank you so much, julie, for joining us today.
00:00:32.581 --> 00:00:34.146
Hi, I'm excited to be here with you.
00:00:34.439 --> 00:00:37.165
Yes, julie, tell me a bit about your journey.
00:00:37.165 --> 00:00:42.668
Here you are at the biggest conference I think K-12 in the United States, and it's right here in your backyard, yes, excited.
00:00:42.668 --> 00:00:43.311
So tell me what brings you here.
00:00:43.311 --> 00:00:45.860
I think K-12 in the United States, and it's right here in your backyard, yes, excited.
00:00:45.860 --> 00:00:47.087
So tell me what brings you here.
00:00:47.761 --> 00:01:00.231
The whole idea of having the ability to see and find new ways of implementing great curriculum, not only in the book form, but also now in the technology of AI.
00:01:00.231 --> 00:01:02.426
Wow, which is exciting.
00:01:02.426 --> 00:01:14.129
Yes, coming from you know the early 90 graduates of colleges, and trying to not feel the skittishness of implementing new technology in the classroom.
00:01:14.129 --> 00:01:17.352
And, being an older, you're yourself.
00:01:17.391 --> 00:01:21.375
You're trying to see how to bring that technology into your classroom.
00:01:21.375 --> 00:01:22.174
Absolutely.
00:01:25.579 --> 00:01:32.813
So I'm also in the other sphere of sitting down and also learning as well as my students.
00:01:32.912 --> 00:01:33.575
So it's great.
00:01:33.575 --> 00:01:34.644
That is wonderful.
00:01:34.644 --> 00:01:38.500
Julie, Can you tell me a bit about your journey, Like how did you decide to become a teacher?
00:01:39.983 --> 00:01:40.885
Well, to become a teacher.
00:01:40.885 --> 00:01:43.432
It wasn't my number one or even my top ten.
00:01:43.432 --> 00:01:48.668
It was education found me, and I was a journalism major.
00:01:48.668 --> 00:01:51.929
That's what I was wanting to do for the longest time.
00:01:51.929 --> 00:02:05.355
And then I decided before Instagram and now Facebook and X and all this you needed to know someone in the business and I wanted to make sure I got that and paid my rent.
00:02:05.355 --> 00:02:08.383
So I went to my counselor and I said what can I do with this?
00:02:08.383 --> 00:02:10.969
And she's like education and I'm like no.
00:02:10.969 --> 00:02:17.822
But then I prayed over it and I've been doing it over for 20 years and I'm very, very excited and proud to be a teacher.
00:02:18.143 --> 00:02:19.145
That's awesome.
00:02:19.145 --> 00:02:21.830
Thank you for watching Spotlight for Success.
00:02:21.830 --> 00:02:26.902
I am Devin Pintosi, chief Operating Officer of American Book Company.

00:02:55.655 --> 00:02:58.808

You can get free samples of our materials either in print or in electronic formats at abck12.com.
00:03:07.843 --> 00:03:09.522
We look forward to hearing from you.
00:03:09.522 --> 00:03:12.570
And do you have any special moments?
00:03:12.570 --> 00:03:15.158
You'd like to share something that's happened in the classroom?
00:03:15.158 --> 00:03:17.324
You're like wow, this is why I got into teaching.
00:03:17.625 --> 00:03:29.135
Yes, when you just asked that question, it just flew me back to the time that when students find out that I'm going to be their teacher, they're like you know, listen, I'm not that great at writing or reading.
00:03:29.135 --> 00:03:35.062
And I'm like, no, you are and you will, and you're going to do it, I'm going to hold your hand.
00:03:35.062 --> 00:03:54.800
And when they come through and we do hands-on collaborations and they find out, you know I am good at this and then when they come and graduate from our eighth grade class and even high school, even college, and they come back with enthusiasm to enter the school and your classroom, it is great feeling that you opened up that atmosphere for them.
00:03:54.800 --> 00:03:55.865
That is awesome.
00:03:55.865 --> 00:03:59.074
And so it makes me cry because they're older and I'm getting older.
00:03:59.514 --> 00:04:02.610
Oh yeah, but you're always learning.
00:04:02.610 --> 00:04:09.179
Yes, it never stops, from the time you're a child until now and now, with the technology and integration and everything.
00:04:09.465 --> 00:04:10.768
And sometimes I have to call them or text them.
00:04:10.768 --> 00:04:16.057
Hey, can you help me with my phone or how can I get on this computer?
00:04:16.459 --> 00:04:16.538
Yes.
00:04:16.985 --> 00:04:20.473
And it's wonderful that they're teaching me and I'm teaching them and we're learning.
00:04:20.713 --> 00:04:22.398
It's a journey that's awesome.
00:04:22.398 --> 00:04:26.555
Is there anything you'd like to share with the ISTE and ASCD community?
00:04:27.125 --> 00:04:28.872
Thank you very much for offering this.
00:04:28.872 --> 00:04:34.435
We are super excited to learn about all the textbooks and also the material online.
00:04:34.435 --> 00:04:38.209
It is much needed, no matter if you're Texas or from Ohio.
00:04:38.209 --> 00:04:42.439
Thank you for doing that, because this world is ever-changing.
00:04:42.805 --> 00:04:43.427
It sure is.
00:04:43.427 --> 00:04:44.170
It's changing.
00:04:44.170 --> 00:04:44.773
So fast.
00:04:44.805 --> 00:04:46.673
Yes, so fast, absolutely.
00:04:47.064 --> 00:04:48.408
Well, thank you so much.
00:04:48.408 --> 00:04:56.290
This is Julie Ortiz from St John Bertram School in San Antonio, Texas, the Archdiocese.
00:04:56.290 --> 00:04:57.369
Thank you so much for joining us today.
00:04:57.389 --> 00:04:58.733
Thank you very much for this opportunity.
00:00:06.469 --> 00:00:09.192
00:00:09.192 --> 00:00:10.996
00:00:10.996 --> 00:00:28.062
00:00:28.062 --> 00:00:30.126
00:00:30.126 --> 00:00:32.252
00:00:32.581 --> 00:00:34.146
00:00:34.439 --> 00:00:37.165
00:00:37.165 --> 00:00:42.668
00:00:42.668 --> 00:00:43.311
00:00:43.311 --> 00:00:45.860
00:00:45.860 --> 00:00:47.087
00:00:47.761 --> 00:01:00.231
00:01:00.231 --> 00:01:02.426
00:01:02.426 --> 00:01:14.129
00:01:14.129 --> 00:01:17.352
00:01:17.391 --> 00:01:21.375
00:01:21.375 --> 00:01:22.174
