A gym full of kids, a stack of fresh books, and a mascot who can turn a story into a celebration—this is how reading becomes a lifelong habit. We sit down with Margaret Jackson of Cocky’s Reading Express to explore how a joyful, high-energy model brings literacy to Title I schools across all 46 South Carolina counties, powered by the University of South Carolina’s iSchool.

00:00:05.919 --> 00:00:08.000
I'm Devin Pintoza, your host.

00:00:08.160 --> 00:00:14.000
We are here in Columbia, South Carolina at the South Carolina Librarians Association.

00:00:14.240 --> 00:00:16.640
We are so happy to have with us today.

00:00:16.719 --> 00:00:18.399
This is Margaret Jackson.

00:00:18.640 --> 00:00:19.839
Margaret, nice to see you.

00:00:20.079 --> 00:00:21.199
Hey, it's great to be here.

00:00:21.359 --> 00:00:24.640
And Margaret joins us from Cocky's Reading Express.

00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:25.600
You got it right.

00:00:25.839 --> 00:00:26.719
Okay, great.

00:00:26.879 --> 00:00:31.280
And can you tell us a bit about uh what you're doing here at the conference at SCLA?

00:00:31.519 --> 00:00:40.560
Yeah, so I was just sitting at the University of South Carolina's iSchool booth, and so what we do is we train many of the librarians in the state.

00:00:40.640 --> 00:00:46.399
So if you want an MLIS, which is a master's in library and information science degree, you're gonna come to us.

00:00:46.719 --> 00:00:46.960
Wow.

00:00:47.200 --> 00:00:47.600
Yes.

00:00:47.840 --> 00:00:52.000
But I was there uh as the coordinator for Cocky's Reading Express.

00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:52.560
Wow.

00:00:52.799 --> 00:00:52.960
Yeah.

00:00:53.200 --> 00:00:53.520
Okay.

00:00:53.679 --> 00:01:00.479
And so what kind of uh uh so does does uh Cocky's Reading Express is this go around to a lot of different conferences?

00:01:00.799 --> 00:01:07.680
Uh no, we actually don't we don't travel to different conferences, but since we're part of the iSchool, we are saying hello to many of our librarian friends.

00:01:08.000 --> 00:01:08.560
Oh, okay.

00:01:08.879 --> 00:01:09.920
Sounds like a good idea.

00:01:10.159 --> 00:01:10.480
Yes.

00:01:10.719 --> 00:01:14.319
And uh so uh what how did you get involved with Cocky's Reading Express?

00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:19.840
Yeah, so uh Cocky's Reading Express, let me just tell you a little bit about what it is so that you can understand how I got involved.

00:01:20.079 --> 00:01:21.280
Oh, it sounds good.

00:01:21.680 --> 00:01:25.040
It's uh uh it's the university's literacy outreach initiative.

00:01:25.280 --> 00:01:25.439
Okay.

00:01:25.680 --> 00:01:32.480
So what we do is we travel around to all 46 counties in South Carolina and we visit Title I elementary schools.

00:01:32.719 --> 00:01:45.680
So we do high-energy storytime programming, singing, dancing, story times um for all the students, pre-K through fifth grade, and then um this is all alongside our mascot cocky.

00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:46.079
Okay.

00:01:46.239 --> 00:01:50.480
Uh and then every single kid gets to pick a book to take home to keep forever.

00:01:50.959 --> 00:01:53.760
And so yeah, yeah, I think it's a wonderful program.

00:01:54.159 --> 00:02:03.120
Yeah, so how I got involved was um I was uh the director of programs at Reading is Fundamental Pittsburgh, and I ran bookmobile programs and services.

00:02:03.280 --> 00:02:06.239
And uh so I really focused on literacy outreach.

00:02:06.319 --> 00:02:08.080
So it's a natural transition.

00:02:08.319 --> 00:02:09.599
Wow, that's great.

00:02:09.840 --> 00:02:11.919
So uh, and I'm looking at the pictures here.

00:02:12.159 --> 00:02:12.719
This is great.

00:02:12.800 --> 00:02:14.879
So you definitely want to check out the pictures.

00:02:15.120 --> 00:02:16.560
Um can you tell us the website?

00:02:16.800 --> 00:02:21.360
Yes, please visit www.cockiesreading express.org.

00:02:21.680 --> 00:02:23.520
Okay, that there you go.

00:02:23.599 --> 00:02:25.840
So that's a great place to get more information.

00:02:26.000 --> 00:02:28.879
But um, can you tell us a bit more about the organization?

00:02:29.199 --> 00:02:32.960
Um so we've been in business for 20 years.

00:02:33.120 --> 00:02:35.039
Um we first started in 2005.

00:02:35.280 --> 00:02:37.759
We were a student government initiative.

00:02:37.919 --> 00:02:46.000
So uh they thought that they were just gonna visit a few schools over winter break, and then uh the the program stuck.

00:02:46.159 --> 00:02:48.000
Uh and we got our own mascot.

00:02:48.080 --> 00:02:55.599
Um, I mean, cocky is the university's mascot, but we have our own cocky who travels around with us, uh, just sharing a love of reading.

00:02:55.759 --> 00:02:56.960
And that's really our goal.

00:02:57.039 --> 00:03:02.479
Uh we want to foster a love of reading and increase access to high-quality, high-interest books.

00:03:02.719 --> 00:03:04.560
So uh it's a self-selection model.

00:03:04.719 --> 00:03:07.199
Kids are getting to pick the book that they really want.

00:03:07.520 --> 00:03:13.439
And then we also install little free libraries at the schools to kind of expand our reach uh beyond our initial visit.

00:03:13.680 --> 00:03:15.280
My gosh, that is just wonderful.

00:03:15.599 --> 00:03:16.479
Yeah, it's a lot of fun too.

00:03:16.639 --> 00:03:19.120
That I bet it sounds like a sounds like a blast.

00:03:19.360 --> 00:03:22.639
Um uh, do you have a message you'd like to share with the SCLA community?

00:03:22.879 --> 00:03:33.199
Um, I think the most important thing to remember is that kids love to have fun, and as adults, we can really create magical experiences for kids.

00:03:33.280 --> 00:03:36.080
And librarians are doing that every single day.

00:03:36.319 --> 00:03:42.879
So we love our South Carolina librarians, and we're really happy to be a part of the South Carolina librarian family.

00:03:43.280 --> 00:03:44.639
Wow, thank you so much.

00:03:44.800 --> 00:03:47.120
That was uh very energetic, love that.

00:03:47.280 --> 00:03:59.120
Uh uh, this is uh once again Margaret Jackson uh with Cocky's Reading Express, and we look forward to hearing more about what's gonna go on uh with your organization over the next year.

00:03:59.360 --> 00:04:00.080
Awesome, thank you.

00:04:00.240 --> 00:04:00.479
Thank you.

00:04:00.960 --> 00:04:01.680
Bye bye.
