00:00:06.451 --> 00:00:09.217
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:09.217 --> 00:00:10.560
I'm Devin Pintosa, your host.
00:00:10.560 --> 00:00:16.013
We are here at the Alabama Educational Technology Conference in sunny Mobile, alabama.
00:00:16.013 --> 00:00:21.109
I'm joined by our special guest, shana Winstead, with Second Life Mac.
00:00:21.109 --> 00:00:23.442
Hello, welcome, shana, thank you.
00:00:23.442 --> 00:00:24.166
Thank you for having me.
00:00:24.166 --> 00:00:28.167
All right, tell me a bit about what brings you here to this conference.
00:00:28.528 --> 00:00:36.551
Yes, so at Second Life Mac, we purchase Apple devices from school districts pretty much any company but we focus on school districts.
00:00:36.551 --> 00:00:55.165
So you might have iPads and MacBooks just stacked up in a warehouse somewhere collecting dust, or you might buy the latest technology or the latest edition, and so we'll buy the older devices and bring money back into the school district, into the school building your technology budget.
00:00:55.165 --> 00:00:57.692
So we're giving money back to the schools.
00:00:58.359 --> 00:00:59.304
How awesome is that?
00:00:59.304 --> 00:01:00.668
I bet you get a lot of takers.
00:01:00.920 --> 00:01:06.233
Yes, yes, it is big business, and I had never heard of this industry before working here.
00:01:06.233 --> 00:01:09.277
I've been here since February, so just over four months.
00:01:09.277 --> 00:01:14.186
Wow but it is a great industry and I'm giving money back into schools.
00:01:14.186 --> 00:01:19.719
We're helping children, we're helping educate the next generation, we're helping schools purchase new technology.
00:01:19.719 --> 00:01:22.304
So it's been a great experience, oh wow.
00:01:22.825 --> 00:01:30.055
So how could people contact you if you've got a school system that's like, hey, I've got a boatload of Macs and I need to make some money fast?
00:01:32.001 --> 00:01:33.829
How do they get in contact with you?
00:01:33.829 --> 00:01:36.000
Yes, so they can find us at SecondLifeMaccom.
00:01:36.019 --> 00:01:36.099
Okay.
00:01:36.439 --> 00:01:44.442
Or you can email us at SLMProcurementcom and then that will be routed to one of the six directors of procurement.
00:01:44.442 --> 00:01:46.825
I'm the director of procurement in the Southeast.
00:01:46.825 --> 00:01:51.789
So, if you're in the Southeast, then it will come to me and I'll reach out to you via telephone.
00:01:51.789 --> 00:01:53.290
Hopefully we have a conversation.
00:01:53.290 --> 00:02:00.575
I can understand what devices you have and I'll provide you with a price quote, tell you how much they're worth and 90 days later you get a check.
00:02:00.575 --> 00:02:01.977
It's a very simple process.
00:02:01.977 --> 00:02:04.522
That's awesome.
00:02:04.522 --> 00:02:04.742
Love that.
00:02:04.742 --> 00:02:06.067
Yes, very, very simple process.
00:02:06.861 --> 00:02:09.044
Thank you for watching Spotlight for Success.
00:02:09.044 --> 00:02:14.081
I am Devin Pintosi, chief Operating Officer of American Book Company.
00:02:14.081 --> 00:02:18.332
We are located here in our headquarters in Woodstock, georgia.
00:02:18.332 --> 00:02:22.361
All of our materials are printed in USA.
00:02:22.361 --> 00:02:34.449
We have course books, e-books and online testing in grades K-12 in mathematics, ela, science and social studies.
00:02:34.449 --> 00:02:42.895
These materials are all designed to help students achieve higher scores on their state-specific high-stakes assessments.
00:02:42.895 --> 00:02:46.097
We guarantee score improvement.
00:02:46.097 --> 00:02:55.055
You can get free samples of our materials either in print or in electronic formats at abck12.com.
00:02:55.055 --> 00:02:56.752
We look forward to hearing from you.
00:02:58.561 --> 00:02:59.522
That's great, shayna.
00:02:59.522 --> 00:03:02.106
So tell me about your journey.
00:03:02.106 --> 00:03:13.324
Before this you were doing other things and your journey in this space of the educational technology space, Awesome, yeah, so I've been in corporate technology sales for over 20 years.
00:03:14.526 --> 00:03:23.736
I don't like to say you know, stating myself, but the first device that I sold was the BlackBerry BlackBerry with the keyboard, even before it had internet access.
00:03:23.919 --> 00:03:26.169
So it was purely an email communication tool.
00:03:26.169 --> 00:03:35.719
So I sold the BlackBerry and I sold VoIP, data hosting, voice over IP and mostly technology sales.
00:03:35.719 --> 00:03:45.989
And then in the middle 2008, when things got a little wacky in technology and the companies AT&T, verizon, lucent, all these companies were buying each other up MCI, worldcom.
00:03:45.989 --> 00:03:51.949
So then I switched over to education technology and I sold one of the first digital curriculums.
00:03:51.949 --> 00:04:01.170
I sold one of the first digital curriculum apps where you can communicate with your parents on your phone get your grades communicate with the teacher soccer practice on Tuesday.
00:04:01.800 --> 00:04:15.715
So I pretty much rode the wave of education technology for the last about 15 years and then most recently I was selling corporate sales and education sales for the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Franklin Covey.
00:04:15.715 --> 00:04:25.394
So we would help people develop their leadership and development internally in the school districts, with the students developing their capacity for leadership, and also on the corporate side.
00:04:25.394 --> 00:04:33.449
And then just about four months ago, you know, I started here at Second Life Mac and it's been awesome to be on the procurement side.
00:04:33.449 --> 00:04:39.369
So I'm no longer selling to schools or corporations, I am actually buying from school districts.
00:04:39.369 --> 00:04:42.007
Now we also buy from organizations.
00:04:42.007 --> 00:04:51.507
So anyone in the Southeast if you have Mac devices that you would like to sell, you know, reach out to us and we can set up a quote and we send them through our processing.
00:04:51.507 --> 00:05:01.326
We audit the devices, we clean them, make sure that they're secure, that no student or employee data is on them, we refurbish them and then we sell them on Amazon and internationally.
00:05:01.728 --> 00:05:02.870
Gosh, that's awesome.
00:05:02.870 --> 00:05:07.011
Shayna, tell me again what's the name of that website, if people want to make that money.
00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:10.309
It is SecondLifeMaccom.
00:05:10.889 --> 00:05:13.807
All right, shayna Winstead, secondlifemaccom.
00:05:13.807 --> 00:05:16.165
Thank you for joining us today.
00:05:16.245 --> 00:05:17.048
Thank you for having me.
00:05:17.048 --> 00:05:18.266
I appreciate the opportunity.
00:00:06.451 --> 00:00:09.217
00:00:09.217 --> 00:00:10.560
00:00:10.560 --> 00:00:16.013
00:00:16.013 --> 00:00:21.109
00:00:21.109 --> 00:00:23.442
00:00:23.442 --> 00:00:24.166
00:00:24.166 --> 00:00:28.167
00:00:28.528 --> 00:00:36.551
00:00:36.551 --> 00:00:55.165
00:00:55.165 --> 00:00:57.692
00:00:58.359 --> 00:00:59.304
00:00:59.304 --> 00:01:00.668
00:01:00.920 --> 00:01:06.233
00:01:06.233 --> 00:01:09.277
00:01:09.277 --> 00:01:14.186
00:01:14.186 --> 00:01:19.719
00:01:19.719 --> 00:01:22.304
00:01:22.825 --> 00:01:30.055
00:01:32.001 --> 00:01:33.829
00:01:33.829 --> 00:01:36.000
00:01:36.019 --> 00:01:36.099
00:01:36.439 --> 00:01:44.442
00:01:44.442 --> 00:01:46.825
00:01:46.825 --> 00:01:51.789
00:01:51.789 --> 00:01:53.290
00:01:53.290 --> 00:02:00.575
00:02:00.575 --> 00:02:01.977
00:02:01.977 --> 00:02:04.522
00:02:04.522 --> 00:02:04.742
00:02:04.742 --> 00:02:06.067
00:02:06.861 --> 00:02:09.044
00:02:09.044 --> 00:02:14.081
00:02:14.081 --> 00:02:18.332
00:02:18.332 --> 00:02:22.361
00:02:22.361 --> 00:02:34.449
00:02:34.449 --> 00:02:42.895
00:02:42.895 --> 00:02:46.097
00:02:46.097 --> 00:02:55.055
00:02:55.055 --> 00:02:56.752
00:02:58.561 --> 00:02:59.522
00:02:59.522 --> 00:03:02.106
00:03:02.106 --> 00:03:13.324
00:03:14.526 --> 00:03:23.736
00:03:23.919 --> 00:03:26.169
00:03:26.169 --> 00:03:35.719
00:03:35.719 --> 00:03:45.989
00:03:45.989 --> 00:03:51.949
00:03:51.949 --> 00:04:01.170
00:04:01.800 --> 00:04:15.715
00:04:15.715 --> 00:04:25.394
00:04:25.394 --> 00:04:33.449
00:04:33.449 --> 00:04:39.369
00:04:39.369 --> 00:04:42.007
00:04:42.007 --> 00:04:51.507
00:04:51.507 --> 00:05:01.326
00:05:01.728 --> 00:05:02.870
00:05:02.870 --> 00:05:07.011
00:05:07.279 --> 00:05:10.309
00:05:10.889 --> 00:05:13.807
00:05:13.807 --> 00:05:16.165
00:05:16.245 --> 00:05:17.048
00:05:17.048 --> 00:05:18.266
