00:00:06.610 --> 00:00:09.775
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:09.775 --> 00:00:11.539
I'm Devin Pintoza, your host.

00:00:11.539 --> 00:00:18.074
We are here at the Alabama Educational Technology Conference in sunny Mobile Alabama.

00:00:18.074 --> 00:00:20.628
I'm here with our special guest.

00:00:20.628 --> 00:00:24.530
This is Nikki Barnicle with St Paul's Episcopal School.

00:00:24.530 --> 00:00:27.368
Hi, how are you today?

00:00:27.679 --> 00:00:29.001
I'm great, wonderful.

00:00:29.562 --> 00:00:29.884
Great.

00:00:29.884 --> 00:00:33.649
So what brings you today to the Alabama ETC?

00:00:35.133 --> 00:00:41.453
My school sent me here to learn more about some different programs that I can implement in my computer lab class.

00:00:41.453 --> 00:00:50.627
My students work on laptops and I'm looking to add more coding into my curriculum.

00:00:50.826 --> 00:00:51.569
That's wonderful.

00:00:51.569 --> 00:00:59.444
So what are you seeing as some things that are effective in the classroom as far as coding and that sort?

00:01:01.165 --> 00:01:02.368
You mean things I've seen here today.

00:01:02.368 --> 00:01:22.073
Well, I spoke with Adventures and they have the same robots that I have in my classroom, except theirs are updated, and that was nice to know that the ones that I have could be replaced with a better, updated version of the same robot that I have.

00:01:22.073 --> 00:01:30.930
So we use an online tool to code the robots and so, anyways, I've spoke with them and that was really helpful.

00:01:31.370 --> 00:01:35.992
That's great, nikki, are you getting to incorporate AI into the coding?

00:01:37.176 --> 00:01:37.798
Not yet.

00:01:37.918 --> 00:01:38.219
Not yet.

00:01:38.379 --> 00:01:39.704
That's something I could probably learn today.

00:01:40.106 --> 00:01:40.569
Oh, okay.

00:01:40.569 --> 00:01:42.406
So yeah, that'll be exciting.

00:01:42.406 --> 00:01:51.049
I hear more and more discussions about that because I've traveled to some of the other ed tech conferences, so I hope, I hope they have some sessions on it, at least today.

00:01:51.319 --> 00:01:52.001
I will look into that.

00:01:52.203 --> 00:01:55.671
Yeah, so tell me a bit about your journey, your career.

00:01:56.680 --> 00:02:04.147
You've been an elementary school teacher for 20 years I've taught second, third, fourth and fifth.

00:02:04.147 --> 00:02:06.561
I currently teach third, fourth and fifth technology.

00:02:06.561 --> 00:02:14.123
I have gone from having zero technology in the classroom to that being my whole curriculum.

00:02:14.123 --> 00:02:22.586
So I feel like I have a lot of experience doing the best I can with no technology and then now having plenty of technology.

00:02:23.268 --> 00:02:27.703
Wow, so I understand you started your career in the public schools, is that right?

00:02:27.824 --> 00:02:28.104
I did.

00:02:28.104 --> 00:02:29.046
I taught for 10 years.

00:02:29.407 --> 00:02:30.411
Oh, okay, public school.

00:02:30.411 --> 00:02:31.221
Where did you teach?

00:02:32.042 --> 00:02:33.665
I taught in Phoenix City for one year.

00:02:33.665 --> 00:02:39.604
I taught fifth grade, and I taught in the Bayou, which is outside of Mobile, for nine years.

00:02:40.224 --> 00:02:41.106
Oh, wonderful.

00:02:41.927 --> 00:02:44.111
Thank you for watching Spotlight for Success.

00:02:44.111 --> 00:02:49.080
I am Devin Pintosi, chief Operating Officer of American Book Company.

00:03:17.942 --> 00:03:21.146
We guarantee score improvement.

00:03:21.146 --> 00:03:30.163
You can get free samples of our materials either in print or in electronic formats at abck12.com.

00:03:30.163 --> 00:03:31.804
We look forward to hearing from you.

00:03:33.427 --> 00:03:35.156
And what can you tell us about?

00:03:35.156 --> 00:03:37.044
Do you have any special moments in the classroom?

00:03:37.044 --> 00:03:38.348
You're like this was so great.

00:03:38.348 --> 00:03:39.853
This is why I got into teaching.

00:03:41.546 --> 00:04:01.812
Yes, a lot of my students that I taught in the first 10 years come from a very low socioeconomic environment and when you have a student just really appreciate that you truly care about their success, that that means more to me than any any test score.

00:04:01.812 --> 00:04:10.436
You know any accolade just knowing that these students truly appreciate what you're doing for them oh, that is awesome.

00:04:10.596 --> 00:04:10.956
It's a.

00:04:10.956 --> 00:04:12.121
It's great.

00:04:12.121 --> 00:04:21.632
Uh, you know, that's the bedrock of education is the teachers believing in their students and that's so awesome that you did that for all of those years.

00:04:21.632 --> 00:04:24.355
And I understand, you made a journey switch.

00:04:24.355 --> 00:04:26.456
You moved into private schools, is that right?

00:04:26.797 --> 00:04:27.057
I do.

00:04:27.057 --> 00:04:28.439
I currently teach at St Paul's.

00:04:28.439 --> 00:04:30.040
This will be my ninth year already.

00:04:30.040 --> 00:04:34.767
Wow, it's hard to believe, but it's been a nice shift.

00:04:34.767 --> 00:04:46.552
Again, I went from having no technology, not even a laptop, at my last school to teaching how to navigate laptops, so it's been quite a shift.

00:04:46.771 --> 00:04:48.415
But it's been great.

00:04:48.415 --> 00:04:49.617
That's great.

00:04:49.617 --> 00:04:54.476
Is there anything else you would like to share with the Alabama EdTech community?

00:04:56.125 --> 00:05:19.291
You know, just remembering while we're here Like I said before, I think a lot of times these days test scores get in the way and lack of administration support gets in the way and just remembering why you're there, remembering that sometimes these students the only person that they see that day, that cares about them, is you, and unfortunately, I have a lot of experience with that.

00:05:19.291 --> 00:05:26.053
Not unfortunately, I feel like that makes me the teacher I am, but just remembering why you're there is huge.

00:05:26.694 --> 00:05:27.757
That is so awesome.

00:05:27.757 --> 00:05:33.617
The power of a teacher who cares and making great impacts with students.

00:05:33.617 --> 00:05:34.358
That's wonderful.

00:05:34.358 --> 00:05:38.706
Nikki Barnacle, it was a pleasure speaking with you today.

00:05:38.766 --> 00:05:39.728
Thank you for having me.

00:05:39.850 --> 00:05:41.434
And I hope you have a great conference.

00:05:41.774 --> 00:05:42.055
Thank you.
