Story Walks That Get Kids Reading

Imagine a picture book unfolding along a sunny park path, each page waiting around the next bend. That’s the magic behind story walk signs, and we sit down with Meghan Beehler from Lark Signs to explore how this simple idea turns movement into motivation for young readers and their families.

00:00:06.080 --> 00:00:09.359
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:09.439 --> 00:00:11.359
I'm Devin Pintozi, your host.

00:00:11.679 --> 00:00:18.480
We are here in the wonderful South Carolina Librarian Association here in Columbia, South Carolina.

00:00:18.640 --> 00:00:20.879
And we have our special guest today.

00:00:21.440 --> 00:00:23.199
This is Megan Beeler.

00:00:23.440 --> 00:00:23.679
Yes.

00:00:24.000 --> 00:00:26.399
Megan, thank you for joining us today.

00:00:27.679 --> 00:00:31.280
I understand that you are with Book Trails, is that right?

00:00:31.600 --> 00:00:31.920
Yes.

00:00:32.079 --> 00:00:48.479
So our company is called Lark Signs, but we currently released or recently released a product called a story walk sign, which has been popular since 2017, I think.

00:00:48.799 --> 00:00:49.520
Oh wow.

00:00:49.679 --> 00:00:50.079
Yeah.

00:00:50.399 --> 00:00:58.479
So we're one of the few people who make signs for book trails.

00:00:59.039 --> 00:01:00.320
That is so awesome.

00:01:00.560 --> 00:01:08.079
And so did that decision, was that hapsen stance, was it on a lark, or was it, you know, well, like we are gonna do this.

00:01:08.239 --> 00:01:13.120
We're gonna preserve the librarian communities with uh the book trail product.

00:01:13.519 --> 00:01:17.200
My boss is very, oh, I can make that.

00:01:17.280 --> 00:01:24.079
And so he's probably stumbled across a storywalk one day and was like, Yeah, we can do that and we'll make it better.

00:01:24.239 --> 00:01:34.000
And so we've listened to librarians who have to change it out, and we've tried to perfect it to make it easy for them and more cost effective.

00:01:34.319 --> 00:01:35.439
Oh, nice, yeah.

00:01:35.680 --> 00:01:37.439
And uh so um how does it work?

00:01:37.599 --> 00:01:43.760
Like you're setting up this whole thing, you've got all of these signs going on uh that are going all around.

00:01:43.840 --> 00:01:49.200
Uh is it is it around the library or how does it work uh as an engagement tool?

00:01:49.599 --> 00:02:17.840
So you can either partner with a park or you can put it up at a local public library or anywhere that has enough space to walk around, usually about a half mile, and you set up these signs about a hundred feet apart, put in the pictures of a storybook, and then you encourage the kids to walk and read and be outside and that is so much fun.

00:02:18.080 --> 00:02:21.759
Um, what do you think of what is the um optimal age group?

00:02:21.919 --> 00:02:26.560
Like what age group is uh uh kind of the the focus?

00:02:27.039 --> 00:02:33.759
Probably you're looking like kindergarten, so four to ten.

00:02:34.400 --> 00:02:35.439
Oh, okay, probably.

00:02:35.759 --> 00:02:37.360
Yeah, that's a nice group.

00:02:37.599 --> 00:02:39.520
Um uh that's a lot of fun.

00:02:39.680 --> 00:02:45.120
I have uh two daughters there, uh three-year-olds, and they're starting to get into all that stuff now.

00:02:45.280 --> 00:02:50.240
Yep, I want to want to see those signs, and uh what a great way to have an interaction going on.

00:02:50.479 --> 00:02:56.960
Um, what's the what's the way that um uh people can find out more about what is going on with Lark?

00:02:57.599 --> 00:03:11.120
So if you go to Larksigns.com, you'll see all of our outdoor products, including our story walk sign, or if you go to readandwalk.com, you'll learn just about our story walk.

00:03:11.439 --> 00:03:12.319
Okay, wow.

00:03:12.479 --> 00:03:14.000
That is such a fun product.

00:03:14.080 --> 00:03:20.319
Um uh we're right across from them here at the conference, and uh let me tell you, there it looks really, really nice.

00:03:20.560 --> 00:03:22.240
So uh do go check them out.

00:03:22.319 --> 00:03:23.680
Uh thank you for joining us today.

00:03:23.919 --> 00:03:25.520
It's super nice to meet you, Megan Beeler.

00:03:25.840 --> 00:03:27.039
Thanks for having me.
