Small Groups, Big Impact

Small Groups, Big Impact

Born to teach. That's the phrase that comes to mind when listening to Tanara Livingston's remarkable story. Speaking from the bustling ASCD, ISTE conference in San Antonio, this Title I facilitator from Mobile County Training Middle School reveals she began her teaching career at just ten years old—running a paid tutoring program for younger children in her neighborhood. Fourteen years into her professional teaching career, that same entrepreneurial spirit and natural aptitude for education continues to define her approach.

00:00:06.511 --> 00:00:09.016
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:09.016 --> 00:00:10.419
I'm Devin Pintosi, your host.

00:00:10.419 --> 00:00:17.176
We are here at wonderful, sunny San Antonio, texas, at the ASCD ISTE conference.

00:00:17.176 --> 00:00:26.900
It's the biggest conference K-12 in the United States and we're so happy here to be joined by Tanera Livingston so happy to have her here.

00:00:26.900 --> 00:00:38.265
She is with the Mobile County Training Middle School in Mobile County, so we're so happy to have you involved here from Mobile, Alabama.

00:00:38.265 --> 00:00:40.331
How was your flight or drive here?

00:00:40.932 --> 00:00:41.893
The flight was.

00:00:41.893 --> 00:00:42.963
It was smooth.

00:00:42.963 --> 00:00:44.165
We had a good flight here.

00:00:44.405 --> 00:00:47.622
Oh, that's wonderful and tell me a bit about what brings you here.

00:00:47.622 --> 00:00:50.631
Tanera to ISTE and ASCD.

00:00:51.091 --> 00:01:02.387
Okay, at my school I serve as the Title I facilitator and when we did our student surveys, one of the things that the kids wanted to see more of is technology integration.

00:01:02.387 --> 00:01:08.427
So we're here today to see what new programs or what new things that we can bring to the school.

00:01:08.987 --> 00:01:13.885
Oh, that's wonderful, and are there certain things that you're like, wow, I really want to have that in my school?

00:01:14.688 --> 00:01:19.971
Yes, the ABC ACAP books is the thing that I'm pushing for.

00:01:19.971 --> 00:01:32.810
One of my friends at a neighboring school uses those books and it's so aligned to the Alabama curriculum and the ACAP testing so I just really want those books in our school.

00:01:33.239 --> 00:01:34.242
Oh, that's so awesome.

00:01:34.242 --> 00:01:40.073
Yeah, we've got a lot of great success stories of students and teachers with the ACAP, with our program.

00:01:40.073 --> 00:01:41.143
That's wonderful to hear.

00:01:41.143 --> 00:01:44.251
So tell me a bit, to narrow, about your journey.

00:01:44.251 --> 00:01:45.887
What brought you into becoming a teacher?

00:01:46.620 --> 00:01:48.784
Thank you for watching Spotlight for Success.

We look forward to hearing from you.

00:02:38.305 --> 00:02:41.189
Okay, so I always wanted to be a teacher.

00:02:41.189 --> 00:02:42.712
I have a funny story.

00:02:42.712 --> 00:02:45.167
When I was 10 years old, I had a tutoring program.

00:02:45.167 --> 00:02:49.468
I would get paid to teach the younger kids in my neighborhood.

00:02:49.468 --> 00:02:51.701
Their parents would pay me to tutor them.

00:02:51.701 --> 00:02:55.413
Amazing, and you were how old I was 10 years old.

00:02:55.633 --> 00:03:03.293
I had a working tutoring program at 10 years old and my aunt, who actually lives in San Antonio right now, she has a story.

00:03:03.293 --> 00:03:16.914
She worked for the government so she would come home and visit me in Mobile from Korea at that time and she had a story about how she would come in my elementary fifth grade classroom and I would be teaching the classroom.

00:03:16.914 --> 00:03:19.943
So I just always wanted to be a teacher.

00:03:21.145 --> 00:03:23.449
That is awesome, and how long have you been teaching?

00:03:23.911 --> 00:03:25.213
This is year 14.

00:03:25.560 --> 00:03:27.167
Wow, that is so great.

00:03:27.167 --> 00:03:32.032
And is there anything in particular you're hoping to get out of the conference today?

00:03:32.032 --> 00:03:33.632
You're like this is why I came here.

00:03:34.039 --> 00:03:41.502
Yeah, I just want to find different ways to engage my students, to build a positive culture in the classroom, things that I know.

00:03:41.502 --> 00:03:47.354
You know I don't like to have just a regular boring book paper classroom.

00:03:47.354 --> 00:03:49.829
I want things to be engaging.

00:03:49.829 --> 00:03:56.554
Also, this year my school we've gone into even though it's a middle school, we've gone into small group rotations.

00:03:56.554 --> 00:04:03.746
So technology has been a great part of those small group rotations, part of those small group rotations.

00:04:03.746 --> 00:04:11.692
So that's one of the reasons why I want the ABC books, because I wanted to use those lessons to reinforce the standards in my small groups.

00:04:11.772 --> 00:04:12.652
Oh, that's so awesome.

00:04:12.652 --> 00:04:17.216
Yeah, because we have the e-books and the online testing too, yes, that's so great.

00:04:17.216 --> 00:04:19.701
Well, tanera, that's so great.

00:04:19.701 --> 00:04:23.512
Is there anything else you'd like to share with the ASCD ISTE community?

00:04:24.880 --> 00:04:27.610
Like I said, I'm excited about this conference.

00:04:27.610 --> 00:04:31.910
I'm excited about being here and learning new things.

00:04:32.271 --> 00:04:33.233
Oh, that's so awesome.

00:04:33.233 --> 00:04:36.269
Well, Tanera, thank you so much for joining us today.

00:04:36.269 --> 00:04:41.791
Tanera Livingston is joining us from the Mobile County School System in Mobile, Alabama.

00:04:41.791 --> 00:04:42.273
Thank you.

00:04:42.399 --> 00:04:43.281
Thank you for having me.
