00:00:06.000 --> 00:00:08.960
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:09.039 --> 00:00:10.880
I'm Devin Pintozi, your host.
00:00:11.119 --> 00:00:20.960
We are here at the North Carolina Mid-Level Educators Conference in sunny Charlotte, North Carolina, with our special guest, Joseph Pizzo.
00:00:21.120 --> 00:00:28.640
We're going to go by Joe Pizzot uh today uh with Black River Middle School in Chester, New Jersey.
00:00:28.719 --> 00:00:30.559
Uh Joe, it's so nice to see you today.
00:00:30.879 --> 00:00:32.320
It's a pleasure to be here, Devin.
00:00:32.479 --> 00:00:35.359
Thank you so much, and thank you to your engineer Lorenzo.
00:00:35.679 --> 00:00:36.960
Oh, well, thank you.
00:00:37.200 --> 00:00:39.840
Uh so uh so tell us a bit about your journey.
00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:42.560
How did you end up coming to NCMLE today?
00:00:42.880 --> 00:00:55.679
One of our colleagues, um, Frank Rudneski said to my colleague uh Ken Pasic and to me, you guys got to go down to North Carolina because they have the greatest conference anywhere.
00:00:55.759 --> 00:00:58.880
You'll you'll thoroughly enjoy it, the people are wonderful.
00:00:59.119 --> 00:01:01.920
And we said, okay, we'll give it a try.
00:01:02.159 --> 00:01:09.439
So Ken and I talked, we do a lot of presentations together on various things, and we try to be cutting edge when we do those.
00:01:09.599 --> 00:01:13.920
So we said, it's another audience, maybe that that'll work out for us.
00:01:14.480 --> 00:01:22.400
And we decided that we had six presentations that we really wanted to do.
00:01:22.640 --> 00:01:25.760
And we would send those in, and maybe we would get two of them.
00:01:26.079 --> 00:01:29.040
So at least we would get to do two things that we want to do.
00:01:29.280 --> 00:01:33.040
And when our acceptance came back, the notices kept coming back.
00:01:33.120 --> 00:01:34.319
We got all six.
00:01:34.560 --> 00:01:34.719
Wow.
00:01:35.040 --> 00:01:36.159
And we were just floored.
00:01:36.239 --> 00:01:37.519
We said, Oh my gosh.
00:01:37.760 --> 00:01:37.920
Wow.
00:01:38.400 --> 00:01:40.799
So we did four yesterday, we're doing two today.
00:01:41.120 --> 00:01:42.560
That is awesome.
00:01:42.799 --> 00:01:52.879
And uh so tell us a bit about your uh conference theme or that or not the conference theme, your uh breakout theme, what you're doing in in the sessions and how it's going.
00:01:53.200 --> 00:01:56.000
I did one alone and five with Ken.
00:01:56.079 --> 00:02:04.959
The one I did alone was uh reading aloud in the middle level because I think kids need to hear the language, and you can do so much with that.
00:02:05.200 --> 00:02:12.000
One of the ladies I I I was sitting with at my table before I came to join you said, thank you so much.
00:02:12.159 --> 00:02:20.800
The the ideas that you gave me I'm going to use in my classroom because these are things that I like to do, and she said they're fun.
00:02:21.599 --> 00:02:24.159
And the kids aren't going to realize that they're learning poetry.
00:02:24.479 --> 00:02:26.960
Oh wow that's awesome.
00:02:27.199 --> 00:02:29.039
Uh, tell us a bit about your journey.
00:02:29.120 --> 00:02:30.319
Uh, you started out.
00:02:30.400 --> 00:02:32.719
Uh, what made you decide to become a teacher?
00:02:33.120 --> 00:02:38.479
As I was saying to you before we went on air, it was a strange journey, actually.
00:02:38.560 --> 00:02:41.680
I didn't know that I wanted to be a teacher.
00:02:41.840 --> 00:02:44.080
That was the farthest thing from my mind as a kid.
00:02:44.159 --> 00:02:50.159
I wanted to replace Mickey Mantle in center field for the Yankees, but I'm not the greatest athlete in the world.
00:02:50.479 --> 00:02:56.319
Then I thought, okay, I can replace Phil Razuto in the booth, I can be an announcer, but I was the shy kid.
00:02:56.479 --> 00:03:03.919
And I actually had the chance to meet Phil Razzuto, but was too shy to go up to him, despite my mom's prompting of go ahead, say hi.
00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:05.280
Just say hi, shake his hand.
00:03:05.439 --> 00:03:06.560
I said, No, mom, I can't.
00:03:06.719 --> 00:03:08.240
I'm just I'm I'm too nervous.
00:03:08.639 --> 00:03:17.280
And I remember I could see myself there in in Yankee Stadium, just shying away from this opportunity.
00:03:17.680 --> 00:03:21.120
But I've been able to pick up a little bit more confidence along the way.
00:03:21.439 --> 00:03:22.319
Yeah, it looks like it.
00:03:22.479 --> 00:03:23.439
I mean, here you are.
00:03:23.599 --> 00:03:25.599
And uh tell us a bit about that journey.
00:03:25.759 --> 00:03:27.360
So you decided to become a teacher.
00:03:27.520 --> 00:03:32.560
Do you have any special moments you could share that you experienced where you're like, wow, this is why I got into teaching?
00:03:32.960 --> 00:03:36.560
When I got into teaching, I really didn't know I wanted to do this.
00:03:36.800 --> 00:03:40.000
Uh I had put teaching down because we had to declare a major.
00:03:40.159 --> 00:03:40.400
Okay.
00:03:40.560 --> 00:03:42.879
And I said, well, all right, I'll I'll put teaching down.
00:03:43.039 --> 00:03:47.439
Maybe my aunt's a teacher, maybe this is something that I'll do someday.
00:03:48.319 --> 00:04:01.599
And I was in a math class, freshman math class of all places, and these two kids in the back are discussing the problems that we had the night before, and they said, Yeah, the number so-and-so, we just we couldn't get.
00:04:01.680 --> 00:04:03.120
I mean, it was it was it was terrible.
00:04:03.199 --> 00:04:04.319
And I overheard this.
00:04:04.479 --> 00:04:09.759
Now, the shy kid would never get up and go over to see these guys, but something pushed me.
00:04:09.919 --> 00:04:11.039
I have no idea what.
00:04:11.120 --> 00:04:12.719
I think it was divine intervention.
00:04:13.039 --> 00:04:19.439
But I was pushed over to these two individuals, and I said, Guys, do you need some help?
00:04:19.680 --> 00:04:22.639
And they said, Yeah, we we we can't get this problem.
00:04:22.720 --> 00:04:24.319
I said, Well, I solved it last night.
00:04:24.480 --> 00:04:25.360
Do you want me to help you?
00:04:25.519 --> 00:04:27.040
They said, Oh, sure, we'd love that.
00:04:27.199 --> 00:04:28.240
So I explained it.
00:04:28.319 --> 00:04:29.360
I said, Do you understand?
00:04:29.439 --> 00:04:30.399
They said, Yeah, thank you.
00:04:30.560 --> 00:04:31.600
Got up, shook my hand.
00:04:31.759 --> 00:04:31.920
Wow.
00:04:32.079 --> 00:04:35.600
I went back, sat down, and said, Hmm, I felt pretty good.
00:04:35.920 --> 00:04:37.360
Maybe this is something I could do.
00:04:37.600 --> 00:04:38.639
That's awesome.
00:04:39.040 --> 00:04:39.759
Thank you for watching.
00:04:44.160 --> 00:04:46.399
Operating officer of American company.
00:04:46.959 --> 00:04:49.360
We are located here in our headquarters.
00:05:27.680 --> 00:05:29.360
We look forward to hearing from you.
00:05:30.639 --> 00:05:35.199
And uh, I understand, uh Joe, you're also involved in podcasting now, is that right?
00:05:35.439 --> 00:05:35.920
Yes, sir.
00:05:36.240 --> 00:05:37.199
So tell us about that.
00:05:37.279 --> 00:05:39.360
How did that get started and what are you doing?
00:05:39.680 --> 00:05:42.399
I wanted to start a podcast for a while.
00:05:42.720 --> 00:05:48.879
And I I didn't know how, and I I just I do a lot of different things, and you know, you have to make time.
00:05:49.600 --> 00:05:55.120
So, colleague of mine got some um got a gift.
00:05:55.360 --> 00:06:01.120
He he was at a conference and he won a year subscription to WeVideo.
00:06:01.519 --> 00:06:12.560
And he said to the folks at We Video, I already have this at my school, but I know this guy who's been in teaching for 40-some years at the time I was, now it's 51.
00:06:13.360 --> 00:06:16.079
And he said, I think he would love this.
00:06:16.319 --> 00:06:18.319
Do you mind if I pass it along?
00:06:18.560 --> 00:06:21.680
And the gentleman there said, Oh, sure, we would like that.
00:06:21.920 --> 00:06:31.120
So I had software, I had somebody I could call or or text if I needed some help with the software, and I started that way.
00:06:31.439 --> 00:06:32.079
Wow.
00:06:32.399 --> 00:06:34.079
Wow, and it just goes from there.
00:06:34.240 --> 00:06:38.319
Tell us about some of the guests you've had on, what's gone on with the uh with the podcast.
00:06:38.639 --> 00:06:39.600
I've interviewed Dr.
00:06:39.680 --> 00:06:42.079
Debbie Silver, I've interviewed Dr.
00:06:42.160 --> 00:06:43.360
Jocelyn Chadwick.
00:06:43.519 --> 00:06:43.759
Dr.
00:06:43.839 --> 00:06:48.399
Jocelyn Chadwick is the former president of National Council of Teachers of English.
00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:48.959
Oh wow.
00:06:49.120 --> 00:06:53.360
And when I met her, she's the nicest lady, as is Debbie Silver.
00:06:53.680 --> 00:07:01.600
Uh I found out that she's a Harvard University Graduate School of Education professor and now special programs person.
00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:04.720
And she has the kindest heart.
00:07:04.959 --> 00:07:10.240
After I had lost my mom, she knew I was taking care of my mom, and we were close.
00:07:10.399 --> 00:07:12.800
So she would reach out to me every week.
00:07:13.040 --> 00:07:19.519
She's in Massachusetts, I'm in New Jersey, but she would say, Joe, everything okay?
00:07:19.839 --> 00:07:21.360
Joe, you doing all right?
00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:28.160
I she sent me a link about a year or so after that.
00:07:28.639 --> 00:07:30.480
And she said, Here's a link for you.
00:07:30.800 --> 00:07:32.240
You might enjoy this.
00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:35.439
And I said, Oh, okay, I'm good, good time to listen to it.
00:07:35.680 --> 00:07:42.879
And I listened to this link, and it's BBC in London radio with five worldwide experts on Mark Twain.
00:07:43.040 --> 00:07:45.120
Oh she's one of those five.
00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:46.240
Oh, how about that?
00:07:46.399 --> 00:07:47.519
And you would never know.
00:07:49.279 --> 00:07:54.399
The more impressive people are, the more uh accomplished they are.
00:07:54.560 --> 00:07:59.040
It seems that the the less pretentious they are, and the nicer they are.
00:07:59.360 --> 00:07:59.680
Oh.
00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:03.279
That's a that's a great observation right there.
00:08:03.519 --> 00:08:09.120
Um tell us a bit about uh what you'd like to say to the NCMLE community uh today.
00:08:09.519 --> 00:08:12.399
NCMLE community, you guys are doing it right.
00:08:12.879 --> 00:08:19.920
You have uh people presenting in a lot of different areas, talking about a lot of different things.
00:08:20.160 --> 00:08:46.480
Uh my colleague Ken Pasic and I are talking about a wide variety of topics that you have felt are important, the history of education, uh the challenges that we as educators face, the culture in education, uh, what motivation is and is not, uh, the need for parental involvement, but we see these things and hear these messages throughout everybody's presentations.
00:08:46.639 --> 00:08:50.480
And the folks here understand what educators need.
00:08:50.639 --> 00:08:51.759
That's the key.
00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:52.879
That's wonderful.
00:08:53.039 --> 00:08:57.600
And uh, can you tell us the uh website or how how people can find out about your podcast?
00:08:57.919 --> 00:09:00.080
If you go on YouTube, I have a YouTube channel.
00:09:00.240 --> 00:09:08.480
Okay, and I think the if you search Joe Piso channel, and then I think the number is 2357.
00:09:09.200 --> 00:09:13.759
Uh but when you put in Joe Pizzo channel, three of us come up.
00:09:14.159 --> 00:09:17.120
Mine's the one with the picture, and I'm the oldest member.
00:09:17.519 --> 00:09:20.240
So you should be able to tell who I am just by looking at it.
00:09:20.480 --> 00:09:21.679
Okay, Joe Piso.
00:09:21.919 --> 00:09:22.799
Well, that's wonderful.
00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:23.600
Thank you so much.
00:09:23.679 --> 00:09:35.679
This is Joe Piso with the uh Joe Piso podcast, as well as a wonderful professor at Black River Middle School, uh, and also an adjunct professor, I understand.
00:09:35.919 --> 00:09:38.159
Thank you so much for being part of this program today.
00:09:38.480 --> 00:09:39.200
It's my pleasure.
00:09:39.600 --> 00:09:41.919
Devin, you you folks are doing nice work.
00:09:42.159 --> 00:09:44.480
May you continue on for a long, long time.
00:09:44.639 --> 00:09:45.679
Lorenzo, thank you.
00:09:45.919 --> 00:09:47.519
All right, thank you, and likewise.
