00:00:06.160 --> 00:00:09.359
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:09.439 --> 00:00:11.279
I am Devin Pentosa, your host.
00:00:11.439 --> 00:00:16.160
We are here in New Orleans at LACU 2025.
00:00:16.399 --> 00:00:21.120
And we are so excited to be here with our special guest, Jacqueline Edwards.
00:00:21.679 --> 00:00:22.320
Well, thank you.
00:00:22.399 --> 00:00:23.359
I'm glad to be here.
00:00:23.600 --> 00:00:31.359
Yes, Jacqueline uh joins us from East Baton Rouge Parish, and she's at the Career and Technical Education Center.
00:00:31.760 --> 00:00:32.399
Yes.
00:00:32.640 --> 00:00:36.000
Uh can you tell me a bit about your work there at the Career Tech Ed?
00:00:36.560 --> 00:00:39.119
Well, I'm a computer science instructor.
00:00:39.280 --> 00:00:44.640
I teach programming languages like C, Python, Java, JavaScript.
00:00:45.039 --> 00:00:55.039
Students in my course are dual enrolled with our community college, which is Baton Ridge Community College, and they are working towards an applied associates in software development.
00:00:55.200 --> 00:01:06.640
And so when they graduate, they'll leave with two certifications, one in Python, one in JavaScript, and they will also have 27 credit hours towards that associate's degree at BRCC.
00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:09.280
Wow, that is incredible.
00:01:09.519 --> 00:01:12.319
That's uh they're really really set for the jobs of the future.
00:01:12.560 --> 00:01:12.959
Yes.
00:01:13.200 --> 00:01:16.319
Um, what uh what classes do you teach in particular?
00:01:16.560 --> 00:01:22.879
Uh in particular, I teach uh intro to programming where students get an introduction to C Python and Java.
00:01:23.120 --> 00:01:28.000
Um also I teach um software development one, uh software design two.
00:01:28.319 --> 00:01:40.239
Um students also have uh ethics and computing, uh Microsoft applications, intro to database design, and then emerging technologies where we have robotics in that class.
00:01:40.799 --> 00:01:41.599
That is so nice.
00:01:42.400 --> 00:01:44.400
Um so uh Jacqueline, that's great.
00:01:44.480 --> 00:01:49.599
Uh can you tell me a bit about what brought you in to start working in the career tech ed space?
00:01:49.920 --> 00:01:53.760
Well, um I've been in the career tech ed space for a long time.
00:01:53.920 --> 00:02:00.239
I started off as a tech support specialist and then I moved on into database administrator.
00:02:00.319 --> 00:02:02.560
I've also done data analysis work.
00:02:02.640 --> 00:02:20.879
I've worked for the Department of Education as a data analysis, I worked for Cox Communication as a data analysis, so I have a background in the technical industry side, and then also I've taught at several colleges, and then I wanted to move into bring, you know, bring my expertise to uh students who are in the computer science area.
00:02:21.199 --> 00:02:22.080
Oh, wow.
00:02:22.159 --> 00:02:24.560
That's a that's a lot of a lot of mission there.
00:02:25.039 --> 00:02:27.439
Thank you for watching Spotlight for Success.
00:02:27.759 --> 00:02:32.560
I am David Pentosi, the chief operating officer of American Book Company.
00:02:33.039 --> 00:02:36.960
We are located here in our headquarters in Woodstock, Georgia.
00:02:37.520 --> 00:02:40.560
All of our materials are printed in the USA.
00:02:41.360 --> 00:03:13.439
We have to use materials are all you can get three samples of our materials either in print or in electronic format at abc12.com.
00:03:13.759 --> 00:03:15.439
We look forward to hearing from you.
00:03:16.240 --> 00:03:17.360
Uh that you're doing.
00:03:17.520 --> 00:03:20.000
Uh, can you tell me what brings you to LACU?
00:03:20.479 --> 00:03:21.199
Oh, LACU.
00:03:21.439 --> 00:03:25.520
Um, well, I'm a computer using educator, and this is a conference for us.
00:03:25.680 --> 00:03:29.759
They have so many uh, you know, professional development workshops.
00:03:29.919 --> 00:03:32.000
I learn so much every time I come.
00:03:32.159 --> 00:03:38.000
Uh, and I actually am going to take what I learned and take it back to my co-workers and do a PD for them.
00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:41.199
So like I'm gonna take my information and share it with others.
00:03:41.280 --> 00:03:49.520
And then also I can apply it in my classroom and my students will, you know, benefit from all this continual learning that I'm doing.
00:03:49.759 --> 00:03:50.639
Oh, that's wonderful.
00:03:50.800 --> 00:03:59.199
And speaking of that continual learning, what do you think is the big uh the big interest or the big strand that you're hoping to get more information on here at the conference?
00:03:59.439 --> 00:04:00.800
Well, of course, it's AI.
00:04:00.879 --> 00:04:02.960
You know, everybody's interested in AI.
00:04:03.120 --> 00:04:07.759
We're thinking about the future and the student's cognitive ability and how that's going to be affected.
00:04:07.919 --> 00:04:16.079
So I was just trying to eat make my life easier as a teacher, you know, get some information on how I can create my lesson plans more efficiently.
00:04:16.319 --> 00:04:28.000
And then also I wanted to see how I could integrate AI and then, you know, teach for the students so I could increase my teaching ability so that I can teach them in a different way or at a higher level of thinking.
00:04:28.160 --> 00:04:34.160
And to try to, you know, maybe I can, you know, have a higher level teacher teach me, and I can pass that on to the students.
00:04:34.319 --> 00:04:37.519
So I'm just interested in seeing what others are doing with AI.
00:04:37.680 --> 00:04:49.839
And a lot of the conferences, a lot of the workshops that I have gone through to here at LACU have, you know, given me some inspiration, some ideas, and so I'm gonna pass those on to my co-workers and also to my students in my classroom.
00:04:50.079 --> 00:04:51.439
Oh, that is wonderful.
00:04:51.680 --> 00:04:56.399
Uh do you have any takeaways that you're like, I'd like to share this with the LACU community?
00:04:56.639 --> 00:04:57.839
Oh, takeaways.
00:04:57.920 --> 00:05:00.639
Um, continual learning, never stop learning.
00:05:00.720 --> 00:05:03.759
You know, technology changes, technology is the future.
00:05:03.920 --> 00:05:10.319
Um, education, you know, we inspire, we create, we promote, we produce.
00:05:10.800 --> 00:05:28.959
Um, you know, all of the fields uh have been impacted in some way by technology, and as a computer educator, it's a very important role, and I take that role very seriously, and I also am excited about the future of computers and technology, and especially in education.
00:05:29.199 --> 00:05:30.560
Oh, yes, absolutely.
00:05:30.800 --> 00:05:31.680
Well, that's wonderful.
00:05:31.839 --> 00:05:41.680
Again, this is uh Jacqueline Edwards, she joins us as an educational career tech ed, uh, educator and uh director of many activities there in East Baton Rouge.
00:05:41.839 --> 00:05:43.600
Thank you for joining us so much today.
00:05:43.920 --> 00:05:44.879
Thank you.
