00:00:06.240 --> 00:00:09.519
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:09.599 --> 00:00:11.279
I am Devin Pentosa, your host.
00:00:11.439 --> 00:00:17.199
We are here in wonderful New Orleans at the LACU conference for 2025.
00:00:17.359 --> 00:00:20.719
We are so excited to be here with our special guest.
00:00:20.800 --> 00:00:23.120
Uh, this is Christina Verbeen.
00:00:23.280 --> 00:00:24.719
Christina joins us.
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:28.079
Uh, she is with Tanja Pahoa Parish, is that right?
00:00:28.239 --> 00:00:28.480
Yes.
00:00:28.800 --> 00:00:31.839
Okay, and I understand you're a you're a tech facilitator.
00:00:32.079 --> 00:00:35.759
I am currently a tech facilitator, uh, specifically high school.
00:00:35.840 --> 00:00:45.280
I help the high school teachers and administrators integrate technology into the classroom uh with hands-on materials as well.
00:00:45.520 --> 00:00:46.799
Oh, that's wonderful.
00:00:47.039 --> 00:00:52.079
And uh I understand previous to this you've been uh you were also a teacher within the parish.
00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:59.759
Yes, I was a biology teacher at my alma mater, Lauringer High School in Tangohoe Parish for 18 years.
00:01:00.079 --> 00:01:00.560
All right.
00:01:00.799 --> 00:01:02.719
And I've thank you for your service.
00:01:03.039 --> 00:01:03.759
Yes, thank you.
00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:15.439
And I've used the uh the books and materials to help my students prepare for actually, I just remember first for the Louisiana EOC, the biology end of course exam.
00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:19.040
Okay, and then transition to the LEAP 2025.
00:01:19.280 --> 00:01:20.560
Oh, that's wonderful.
00:01:20.799 --> 00:01:24.959
And uh can you tell me, uh Christina, um, how did it go in the classroom?
00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:26.480
Uh students took the test.
00:01:26.879 --> 00:01:29.680
Um, how would you use the materials in the classroom?
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:35.680
So I use the materials to help as a supplement and to kind of track where they were.
00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:48.719
The pretest in the biology book uh would use, I would give that to them as kind of a beginning of the year to see where they were at, see what skills that they came already knowing.
00:01:48.799 --> 00:02:07.920
Um, from you know, elementary school, things like you know, ecosystems, food chains, food webs, a lot of times they were familiar with that, but kind of see what skills they were good with, what skills they were not, and then that kind of helped me better prepare and better track and stay on pace teaching the material.
00:02:08.159 --> 00:02:12.960
So concepts that they knew really well, I didn't have to spend as much time on.
00:02:13.199 --> 00:02:20.159
Concepts like genetics that they did not maybe know as well, I would spend a little bit more time on.
00:02:20.319 --> 00:02:27.919
Most of my students had a really good seventh grade science teacher that did punnet squares and things like that really, really well.
00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:30.479
So that showed on that pretest.
00:02:30.800 --> 00:02:31.199
Oh, great.
00:02:31.439 --> 00:02:38.560
Um, so then I could spend a little bit more time maybe like on mitosis or meiosis, and this gives really good assessments.
00:02:38.719 --> 00:02:54.879
The quizzes and things I found were really good to use for um, you know, just kind of check their knowledge in the lesson, bell works, uh activities or end of ticket, you know, end of class, you know, exit ticket kind of things.
00:02:55.120 --> 00:03:05.840
But I like to use it, um, you know, assessing them little by little along the way to see where they were struggling, see where I needed to reteach at was really, really good.
00:03:06.400 --> 00:03:08.560
Thank you for watching Spotlight for success.
00:03:09.120 --> 00:03:13.759
I am the chief operating officer of American company.
00:03:14.319 --> 00:03:54.639
We are located here in our headquarters in the Georgia.com.
00:03:55.039 --> 00:03:56.560
We look forward to hearing from you.
00:03:57.680 --> 00:03:58.960
Oh, that's wonderful.
00:03:59.120 --> 00:04:02.319
And um and what was the experience for the students after they took the test?
00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:11.039
How did they so all of my students always they came back to me and always said, Oh my gosh, Miss Verbeen, that was really easy.
00:04:11.199 --> 00:04:14.400
Uh, you know, so they were always they they felt prepared.
00:04:14.560 --> 00:04:20.480
Uh when scores come back, we were always top of the parish in the scores for biology.
00:04:20.959 --> 00:04:27.120
Not maybe not number one, but we were, you know, number one, number two, you know, usually uh at the at the top.
00:04:27.439 --> 00:04:29.279
So would you say the scores improved?
00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:30.319
Always, yeah.
00:04:30.480 --> 00:04:41.839
My scores always I always looked at um passing, you know, my students that were had some that, you know, test taking, you know, that they were scared to take the test or didn't do well before.
00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:52.319
So students that may have in the past scored like unsat or um approaching basic, they came back with a basic.
00:04:52.480 --> 00:04:52.800
Oh wow.
00:04:53.040 --> 00:05:00.240
They were like just it was always a level or two higher and just were just awesome.
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:03.920
They they were they were really they were really excited.
00:05:04.480 --> 00:05:05.439
That is awesome.
00:05:05.600 --> 00:05:07.120
That is so great to hear.
00:05:07.360 --> 00:05:13.600
And uh now that you're here at at LaCue, uh what kind of things are you hoping to get out of the conference this year?
00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:16.959
So, really looking forward to updated resources.
00:05:17.040 --> 00:05:24.240
I know y'all have worked on updating the biology book, and we actually had one of our teachers in our parish work with that.
00:05:24.639 --> 00:05:27.519
So I'm I'm excited to see that updated material.
00:05:27.920 --> 00:05:30.319
We're so privileged to work with your with your parish.
00:05:30.639 --> 00:05:35.120
Yeah, and we we had someone uh with the civics because the civics is coming up.
00:05:35.199 --> 00:05:43.439
We had another one of our teachers work with that, and so I'm really excited to see how our students um do in those areas.
00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:57.759
Also looking at all the new upcoming AI, things like that to kind of help also, you know, they can take some of the materials, put some things in AI to, you know, they've got content, but then kind of do some hands-on.
00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:02.079
Okay, here's here's some content with some hands-on activities that I can do.
00:06:02.160 --> 00:06:06.720
So taking a little bit of that and just making it more real, especially in the science.
00:06:06.959 --> 00:06:12.160
Hands-on in the science, making it real world, making real-world connections, that's what I'm looking for.
00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:13.279
Oh, that's awesome.
00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:15.519
Well, that's what we uh we plan on delivering.
00:06:15.839 --> 00:06:17.759
In addition to that, great score improvements.
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:19.839
Let's get some more hands-on activities.
00:06:20.240 --> 00:06:25.439
And uh, we're really looking forward to working with you and the parish and all of Louisiana in the future.
00:06:25.680 --> 00:06:26.079
Thank you.
00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:32.480
Um, do you have anything you'd like to share with the LACU community as they're like a takeaway from this conference?
00:06:32.879 --> 00:06:37.600
Uh, I guess just you know, go look, uh, great resources here.
00:06:37.680 --> 00:06:40.399
I'm really excited about all the updates.
00:06:40.560 --> 00:06:50.319
Y'all are great, you know, reaching out and uh making sure that everything is there and up to date and ready to go and easy to use.
00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:51.360
Awesome.
00:06:51.519 --> 00:06:56.879
Well, thank you so much, Christina Verbeen uh joining us from Tanjipola Parish, uh tech facilitator.
00:06:56.959 --> 00:06:57.759
Thank you for joining us.
00:06:58.000 --> 00:06:58.800
Thank you.
00:00:06.240 --> 00:00:09.519
00:00:09.599 --> 00:00:11.279
00:00:11.439 --> 00:00:17.199
00:00:17.359 --> 00:00:20.719
00:00:20.800 --> 00:00:23.120
00:00:23.280 --> 00:00:24.719
00:00:24.879 --> 00:00:28.079
00:00:28.239 --> 00:00:28.480
00:00:28.800 --> 00:00:31.839
00:00:32.079 --> 00:00:35.759
00:00:35.840 --> 00:00:45.280
00:00:45.520 --> 00:00:46.799
00:00:47.039 --> 00:00:52.079
00:00:52.320 --> 00:00:59.759
00:01:00.079 --> 00:01:00.560
00:01:00.799 --> 00:01:02.719
00:01:03.039 --> 00:01:03.759
00:01:04.000 --> 00:01:15.439
00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:19.040
00:01:19.280 --> 00:01:20.560
00:01:20.799 --> 00:01:24.959
00:01:25.040 --> 00:01:26.480
00:01:26.879 --> 00:01:29.680
00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:35.680
00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:48.719
00:01:48.799 --> 00:02:07.920
00:02:08.159 --> 00:02:12.960
00:02:13.199 --> 00:02:20.159
00:02:20.319 --> 00:02:27.919
00:02:28.080 --> 00:02:30.479
00:02:30.800 --> 00:02:31.199
00:02:31.439 --> 00:02:38.560
00:02:38.719 --> 00:02:54.879
00:02:55.120 --> 00:03:05.840
00:03:06.400 --> 00:03:08.560
00:03:09.120 --> 00:03:13.759

00:04:02.400 --> 00:04:11.039
00:04:11.199 --> 00:04:14.400
00:04:14.560 --> 00:04:20.480
00:04:20.959 --> 00:04:27.120
00:04:27.439 --> 00:04:29.279
00:04:29.519 --> 00:04:30.319
00:04:30.480 --> 00:04:41.839
00:04:42.079 --> 00:04:52.319
00:04:52.480 --> 00:04:52.800
00:04:53.040 --> 00:05:00.240
00:05:00.319 --> 00:05:03.920
00:05:04.480 --> 00:05:05.439
00:05:05.600 --> 00:05:07.120
00:05:07.360 --> 00:05:13.600
00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:16.959
00:05:17.040 --> 00:05:24.240
00:05:24.639 --> 00:05:27.519
00:05:27.920 --> 00:05:30.319
00:05:30.639 --> 00:05:35.120
00:05:35.199 --> 00:05:43.439
00:05:43.600 --> 00:05:57.759
00:05:58.000 --> 00:06:02.079
00:06:02.160 --> 00:06:06.720
00:06:06.959 --> 00:06:12.160
00:06:12.399 --> 00:06:13.279
00:06:13.439 --> 00:06:15.519
00:06:15.839 --> 00:06:17.759
00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:19.839
00:06:20.240 --> 00:06:25.439
00:06:25.680 --> 00:06:26.079
00:06:26.240 --> 00:06:32.480
00:06:32.879 --> 00:06:37.600
00:06:37.680 --> 00:06:40.399
00:06:40.560 --> 00:06:50.319
00:06:50.639 --> 00:06:51.360
00:06:51.519 --> 00:06:56.879
00:06:56.959 --> 00:06:57.759
00:06:58.000 --> 00:06:58.800
