00:00:06.608 --> 00:00:09.413
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:09.413 --> 00:00:11.215
I am Devin Pintosi, your host.

00:00:11.215 --> 00:00:23.405
We are here in sunny San Antonio, texas, at the ASCD ISTE Conference 2025, and we are so happy today to have our special guest, janie Olivari.

00:00:23.405 --> 00:00:30.164
She is here from Pleasanton ISD at Pleasanton High School in Pleasanton, texas.

00:00:30.164 --> 00:00:31.829
Thank you for joining us today, janie.

00:00:32.029 --> 00:00:33.720
It's my pleasure to be here, thank you.

00:00:33.962 --> 00:00:34.482
Wonderful.

00:00:34.482 --> 00:00:38.670
Can you tell us a bit about what brings you here to ASCD, isd?

00:00:38.689 --> 00:00:46.151
So anytime a teacher gets a chance to go to a conference, they jump right on in, and especially ISTE.

00:00:46.151 --> 00:00:47.594
It's one of the biggest conferences.

00:00:47.594 --> 00:01:00.192
It has a lot of beneficial technology, software, teaching strategies for teachers, and so that's why I'm here today and also teachers get a free day pass at the expo.

00:01:00.192 --> 00:01:06.371
Oh, that is so awesome, so anything free is also, you know, something that I'm going to jump at.

00:01:06.420 --> 00:01:07.221
Free day pass?

00:01:07.221 --> 00:01:08.805
Absolutely yeah, why not?

00:01:08.805 --> 00:01:10.248
It's great.

00:01:10.248 --> 00:01:11.873
It's right here in your backyard, that's right.

00:01:11.873 --> 00:01:20.594
So can you tell me a bit about your career as an educator in Pleasanton High School?

00:01:21.260 --> 00:01:23.510
So I'll be starting my 26th year at Pleasanton High School.

00:01:23.510 --> 00:01:24.516
I'm actually a graduate of Pleasanton High School.

00:01:24.516 --> 00:01:30.531
I'm actually a graduate of Pleasanton High School, so it's fun to go back and teach at the school that I graduated from.

00:01:30.531 --> 00:01:39.903
So I've seen it change, you know, over the years and evolve into really a school that values the students that attend.

00:01:39.903 --> 00:01:42.507
We have great programs of study for our students.

00:01:42.507 --> 00:01:53.150
I teach AV classes, which includes video editing, sound editing, graphic design, and so being on this podcast here is right up my alley.

00:01:53.150 --> 00:01:56.209
We started a podcast about five years ago.

00:01:56.209 --> 00:02:08.805
It's been on a two-year hiatus because we can't find a podcasting host, but I saw you all set up here and so I wanted to see you know what this technology was about here that you are using.

00:02:08.884 --> 00:02:11.412
Oh, yeah, certainly we.

00:02:11.412 --> 00:02:12.394
We appreciate that.

00:02:12.394 --> 00:02:27.711
You know we're we're growing and learning as well as we go through this process of doing these podcasts, and it's just so much fun and so rewarding to be able to learn from people like yourself that are also learning, and podcasting is so new for a lot of people still today.

00:02:27.730 --> 00:02:31.449
Yeah, Thank you for watching Spotlight for Success.

00:02:31.449 --> 00:02:36.460
I am Devin Pintosi, chief Operating Officer of American Book Company.

00:02:36.460 --> 00:02:40.792

00:03:05.313 --> 00:03:08.525

00:03:08.525 --> 00:03:17.546
You can get free samples of our materials either in print or in electronic formats at abck12.com.

00:03:17.546 --> 00:03:19.209
We look forward to hearing from you.

00:03:21.330 --> 00:03:29.009
Can you tell me a bit about what you're hoping to get out of your ASCD ISTE experience that you're going to take back to Pleasanton High School?

00:03:29.330 --> 00:03:50.907
So, as a technology teacher, every year we get new courses that we have to teach, some courses we teach year after year, but this year I'll be teaching practicum and marketing, and so I'm looking for curriculum with entrepreneurship, things that lend itself to the marketing pathway, I guess you could say.

00:03:50.907 --> 00:04:01.812
And so I just want to be able to teach this class in a way that's going to be fun for the kids, and so I'm looking for professionals in that area oh, that's great.

00:04:01.812 --> 00:04:03.274
I'm looking for professionals in that area, oh, that's great.

00:04:03.274 --> 00:04:12.742
And then, like I said, this too, I mean seeing the equipment and new technologies that we can bring into our schools as well, into our AV pathway oh, that is so awesome.

00:04:12.763 --> 00:04:14.905
Can you tell me why you got into teaching?

00:04:14.905 --> 00:04:16.646
You definitely made this your vocation.

00:04:18.053 --> 00:04:18.254
Yes.

00:04:18.254 --> 00:04:25.634
Well, when I graduated college, I did think I just wanted to be a stay-at-home mom.

00:04:25.634 --> 00:04:30.668
You know, I had just graduated and I was going to have my first child and that first year that I stayed home I got really bored.

00:04:30.668 --> 00:04:35.081
I was like I feel like there's so much more that I could be doing in our world.

00:04:35.081 --> 00:04:37.839
And then my husband was in education.

00:04:37.839 --> 00:04:43.516
He was like you should go to the alternative certification pathway, you know program, and become a teacher that way.

00:04:43.516 --> 00:04:47.192
And so I did, and that's how I became a teacher.

00:04:47.432 --> 00:05:01.697
I got bored at being at home there you go, and so there happened to be a business position opened at my high school, which was my degree area, and so it just, it just all fell into place the way I was supposed to and that is so great.

00:05:01.978 --> 00:05:08.901
Do you have a special memory you can share of, maybe an interaction with the class or student where you're like, wow, this is why I got into teaching?

00:05:09.040 --> 00:05:19.821
Well, I also do a business club called Business Professionals of America, and really that is my baby, that is what makes my teaching profession rewarding.

00:05:19.821 --> 00:05:27.380
I mean, yes, seeing the kids every year, meeting new kids, meeting new families, but kids that want to go into the business field, the technology field.

00:05:27.380 --> 00:05:29.865
They have goals, they have aspirations.

00:05:29.865 --> 00:05:47.386
We compete regional, state and national level, and so that's our goal every year is to compete and to win, and so that's what I really love about my job is doing the business club and working with kids that are business-minded and have those types of aspirations.

00:05:47.829 --> 00:05:48.512
That is wonderful.

00:05:48.512 --> 00:05:54.937
Being able to do those clubs that are taking kids to that next level, yes, and you being a part of that, that's great.

00:05:54.937 --> 00:05:56.213
That's got to be so rewarding.

00:05:56.293 --> 00:05:57.276
Yes, it is.

00:05:58.019 --> 00:05:58.540
That's great.

00:05:58.540 --> 00:06:05.783
So let me ask you do you have a message you'd like to share with the ASCD ISTE community?

00:06:07.411 --> 00:06:09.238
Every day is a time to learn.

00:06:09.238 --> 00:06:19.658
As teachers, we know we never stop learning, and so technology changes so fast, software changes so fast, even teaching strategies change so fast.

00:06:19.658 --> 00:06:20.834
So always be learning.

00:06:20.834 --> 00:06:29.002
The best type of teacher is a teacher that can also be a student.

00:06:29.002 --> 00:06:29.603
That's awesome.

00:06:29.603 --> 00:06:30.264
Never stop learning.

00:06:30.529 --> 00:06:31.555
Never stop learning.

00:06:31.555 --> 00:06:33.752
Absolutely, janie Olivari.

00:06:33.752 --> 00:06:35.497
It's a pleasure having you on today.

00:06:35.497 --> 00:06:36.321
Thank you so much.

00:06:36.321 --> 00:06:38.637
I hope you have a great experience here at ASCD.

00:06:38.637 --> 00:06:44.939
Asd Again, she joins us from Pleasanton ISD, Pleasanton, Texas.

00:06:44.939 --> 00:06:45.742
Thank you so much.

00:06:46.043 --> 00:06:46.564
Thank you.
