Literacy For A Reimagined World

Literacy is getting rewritten in real time and educators don’t have the option to sit it out. From NCRA in Winston-Salem, we sit down with Hiller Spires, Professor at NC State University and NCRA president-elect, to talk about what comes next for literacy instruction as technology accelerates and classrooms adapt on the fly.

00:00:06.240 --> 00:00:09.199
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:09.279 --> 00:00:11.199
Hi, I'm Devin Pintozzi, your host.
00:00:11.439 --> 00:00:16.239
We are here at NCRA in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
00:00:16.399 --> 00:00:33.119
And we are here with our special guest, Professor Emerita at NC State University, and uh the new uh who will be the president-elect for NCRA for next year, uh, Miss Hiller Spyers.
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:34.240
Thank you for joining us today.
00:00:34.479 --> 00:00:35.600
Thank you for having me.
00:00:35.920 --> 00:00:36.560
Wonderful.
00:00:36.799 --> 00:00:44.640
Hiller, tell it tell us a little bit about uh what's going on with you here at NCRA and the things that will happen next year.
00:00:45.119 --> 00:00:45.759
Sure.
00:00:46.159 --> 00:00:51.439
So currently I am president-elect, and in July I will be president.
00:00:51.600 --> 00:00:57.520
So one of the things I was tasked with was coming up for a theme for next year's conference.
00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:08.879
And the theme that I came up with was literacy for a reimagined world, colon, innovation, and humanity.
00:01:10.319 --> 00:01:32.239
And I chose that theme because I think that literacy is such an important aspect of our world, and it's such an important aspect for young people to learn to be literate so that they can participate in society in a thoughtful way.
00:01:32.959 --> 00:01:38.640
And I think that we're in a climate right now where we need to use our imagination.
00:01:39.599 --> 00:01:43.120
And I also think that we have a lot of innovation going on.
00:01:43.599 --> 00:01:50.640
I think about what's happening in with AI and technology and how that's changing education.
00:01:50.879 --> 00:02:00.079
And what I want to make sure is that we're futuristic and visionary, but that we also center humanity in what we come up with.
00:02:00.159 --> 00:02:03.439
And I think that's so important, and I want educators to think about that.
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:04.799
Oh, that's wonderful.
00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:13.199
Are there any special points or focals of emphasis at the conference, maybe the strands or things like that that you can share?
00:02:13.520 --> 00:02:33.280
Sure, we're still in the planning phases, but we definitely will have a focus on artificial intelligence and how that is changing reading and writing in education, and we want to be on the forefront of that and we want to help shape it so that it can be fruitful for everyone.
00:02:33.599 --> 00:02:38.400
I'll tell you, in terms of AI, it really seems like education is at the forefront.
00:02:38.560 --> 00:02:43.280
It's at the engine, not the caboose on this particular form of technology.
00:02:43.360 --> 00:02:48.319
It's uh we're running running headlong into this and learning as we go.
00:02:48.639 --> 00:02:49.360
Absolutely.
00:02:49.759 --> 00:02:58.800
And then, you know, we also are very interested in North Carolina in the new English language art standards that are going to be coming out very soon.
00:02:59.199 --> 00:03:08.639
So our next year's conference will focus on that as well, and we want to provide great information for our teachers so that they can be armed with all the new information.
00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:09.840
Oh, that's wonderful.
00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:10.719
We appreciate that.
00:03:10.879 --> 00:03:25.199
And as publishers at American Book Company, we really appreciate that information as well because we want to make sure that uh we are also uh as part of the education community are able to um provide that uh to the uh to the educators out there.
00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:26.159
Well, that's wonderful.
00:03:26.240 --> 00:03:29.680
So it sounds like you've got a lot of good plans for what's going on.
00:03:29.840 --> 00:03:32.319
I understand you may have some special speakers as well.
00:03:32.639 --> 00:03:37.120
Well, again, we're in the planning phases and we haven't um reached out to folks yet.
00:03:37.599 --> 00:03:43.520
But one of um the people on my wish list is um an author named Jason Reynolds.
00:03:43.599 --> 00:03:44.560
You probably heard of him.
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:52.159
He's an amazing um author for middle school students, and we would love to get him, so I might be trying to figure out how to make that happen.
00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:54.000
Oh, that sounds like a great plan.
00:03:54.240 --> 00:03:58.960
So hopefully you can get him, and I'm sure that'll be a barnbuster there, getting him over here.
00:03:59.199 --> 00:03:59.520
Yeah.
00:03:59.680 --> 00:04:01.120
Um that sounds wonderful.
00:04:01.280 --> 00:04:06.240
Uh again, this is uh Hiller Spires, uh uh president elect of NCRA.
00:04:06.400 --> 00:04:13.199
We look forward to hearing more about what you're going to do in the future and uh hope for a successful 2027.
00:04:13.840 --> 00:04:14.639
Thank you very much.
00:04:14.960 --> 00:04:15.759
Thank you.
00:00:06.240 --> 00:00:09.199
00:00:09.279 --> 00:00:11.199
00:00:11.439 --> 00:00:16.239
00:00:16.399 --> 00:00:33.119
00:00:33.200 --> 00:00:34.240
00:00:34.479 --> 00:00:35.600
00:00:35.920 --> 00:00:36.560
00:00:36.799 --> 00:00:44.640
00:00:45.119 --> 00:00:45.759
00:00:46.159 --> 00:00:51.439
00:00:51.600 --> 00:00:57.520
00:00:57.759 --> 00:01:08.879
00:01:10.319 --> 00:01:32.239
00:01:32.959 --> 00:01:38.640
00:01:39.599 --> 00:01:43.120
00:01:43.599 --> 00:01:50.640
00:01:50.879 --> 00:02:00.079
00:02:00.159 --> 00:02:03.439
00:02:03.760 --> 00:02:04.799
00:02:05.040 --> 00:02:13.199
00:02:13.520 --> 00:02:33.280
00:02:33.599 --> 00:02:38.400
00:02:38.560 --> 00:02:43.280
00:02:43.360 --> 00:02:48.319
00:02:48.639 --> 00:02:49.360
00:02:49.759 --> 00:02:58.800
00:02:59.199 --> 00:03:08.639
00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:09.840
00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:10.719
00:03:10.879 --> 00:03:25.199
00:03:25.520 --> 00:03:26.159
00:03:26.240 --> 00:03:29.680
00:03:29.840 --> 00:03:32.319
00:03:32.639 --> 00:03:37.120
00:03:37.599 --> 00:03:43.520
00:03:43.599 --> 00:03:44.560
00:03:44.719 --> 00:03:52.159
00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:54.000
00:03:54.240 --> 00:03:58.960
00:03:59.199 --> 00:03:59.520
00:03:59.680 --> 00:04:01.120
00:04:01.280 --> 00:04:06.240
00:04:06.400 --> 00:04:13.199
00:04:13.840 --> 00:04:14.639
00:04:14.960 --> 00:04:15.759
