Libraries Beyond Books

Send us a text

Think a library is just shelves and a reference desk? Spend a few minutes with us and librarian Jenny Lao from Richland Library Northeast, and watch that picture shift. Recorded at the South Carolina Library Association gathering in Columbia, our conversation dives into how thoughtful programming and equity-focused leadership can turn a branch into a true community hub.

00:00:06.240 --> 00:00:09.519
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:09.599 --> 00:00:11.439
I am Devin Pentosi, your host.

00:00:11.679 --> 00:00:17.679
We are here at the wonderful facility in South Carolina, Columbia, South Carolina.

00:00:17.920 --> 00:00:25.839
And we are here at the South Carolina Librarian Association meeting, and we are so excited to be here with our special guest.

00:00:26.000 --> 00:00:27.199
This is Jenny Lau.

00:00:27.600 --> 00:00:29.839
Jenny Lau, thank you for joining us today.

00:00:30.160 --> 00:00:31.440
Thank you for having me.

00:00:32.159 --> 00:00:39.920
Jenny joins us from the Richland Library Northeast branch, and we are so excited you could be here.

00:00:40.560 --> 00:00:46.000
Can you tell me, Jenny, a little bit about what brings you here to the SCLA?

00:00:47.200 --> 00:00:51.600
So this is an annual conference that we have here in South Carolina.

00:00:51.920 --> 00:00:55.920
I've been working in libraries for about four years now.

00:00:56.240 --> 00:01:05.040
This is my second time here, and this time I do have three presentations at the conference, so that's my main reason for being here.

00:01:05.359 --> 00:01:08.640
Oh, uh can you tell us about your presentations?

00:01:08.959 --> 00:01:09.920
Oh yeah, sure.

00:01:10.319 --> 00:01:19.840
So yesterday I was part of a poster presentation that focuses on EDI committees, uh, especially at Richland Library.

00:01:19.920 --> 00:01:34.560
Um I am actually the chair and co-founder of our API Alliance Committee, which highlights um Asian American Pacific Islander events here in uh South Carolina.

00:01:34.719 --> 00:01:41.359
We plan different programs just kind of highlighting uh API voices and holidays uh throughout the year.

00:01:41.920 --> 00:01:43.680
Oh, that is wonderful, Jenny.

00:01:44.000 --> 00:01:45.840
And uh that is great.

00:01:46.079 --> 00:01:49.840
So um what uh what kind of things would you like to share?

00:01:50.000 --> 00:01:56.560
Do you have anything you'd like to share specifically with the SCLA community about maybe uh some of the topics that you covered?

00:01:57.439 --> 00:02:08.560
Um yeah, so uh my other presentations are going to be about different programming in the library, uh such as like health and fitness programs.

00:02:08.960 --> 00:02:21.360
Um, a lot of times when people think of libraries, they think, you know, just reading or like getting access to the computer, which are very important factors of what library workers do.

00:02:21.599 --> 00:02:34.000
Um, but there's also the other stuff to engage our communities and give them access to things that they may not have thought of accessing at the library, such as Zumba classes, yoga classes.

00:02:34.240 --> 00:02:37.840
Um we also do cooking programs at Richmond Library Northeast.

00:02:38.240 --> 00:02:53.280
I do a lot of the Asian cooking programs, and that you know not only introduces our customers or our uh patrons to new cultures, but it gives them a chance to try maybe foods they may not have tried on their own.

00:02:53.599 --> 00:02:55.039
So wonderful.

00:02:55.280 --> 00:03:04.960
Well that sounds like a great uh great thing, and it's nice to hear about some of those features that you know the the scope of what a library can offer has changed so much.

00:03:05.120 --> 00:03:05.439
Yeah.

00:03:05.680 --> 00:03:15.520
So it's great that you're doing that there in uh Richland Public Libraries, and uh we wish you all the best in your future endeavors, you know, continuing on with your work there.

00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:16.719
That sounds great.

00:03:16.879 --> 00:03:18.879
Uh, once again, this is Jenny Lau.

00:03:19.120 --> 00:03:22.560
Uh Jenny Lau from Richland Public Library Northeast.

00:03:22.719 --> 00:03:23.680
Thank you for joining us today.

00:03:23.919 --> 00:03:25.360
Yeah, thank you for having me.
