Send us a text

Ever wondered how a simple open mic can change the feel of a library? We sit down with Brittany Smith from Richland Library Sand Hills—freshly launched into her graduate studies at the University of South Carolina—to explore how handing the microphone to neighbors turns a quiet room into a vibrant community stage. From poetry and storytelling to music and student showcases, Brittany walks us through the practical steps any library can take to host a safe, inclusive, and wildly engaging open mic.

00:00:26.160 --> 00:00:32.719
Brittany comes to us uh from uh Columbia, I mean, I'm sorry, from uh Richland County.

00:00:32.960 --> 00:00:37.359
Um she she is at the Richland Sand Hills location, is that right?

00:00:37.759 --> 00:00:38.960
Richland Library Sand Hills.

00:00:39.200 --> 00:00:42.640
Richland Library Sand Hills, and we are so excited to have you here today.

00:00:42.880 --> 00:00:44.000
Thank you for having me.

00:00:44.320 --> 00:00:51.840
All right, so can you tell me a bit um as we continue here, Brittany, about what um what brings you to this conference today?

00:00:52.159 --> 00:01:08.719
Yeah, so I'm actually a new library student at USC, and I'm excited to dive into um everything libraries now and um being a part of it, and I'm actually gonna be speaking on Thursday at um for one of the presentations.

00:01:09.040 --> 00:01:10.879
Wow, can you tell me about that presentation?

00:01:11.120 --> 00:01:13.680
Yeah, so um, we're doing open mic and libraries.

00:01:13.840 --> 00:01:32.959
I'm doing it with my fellow co-worker, Rasheen Richardson, he's the um manager at um Richton Library Northeast, and we're gonna talk about how open mic programs can be beneficial um to the community, how you connect in any library, whether academic, school, or public library.

00:01:33.040 --> 00:01:34.239
So it's gonna be a fun time.

00:01:34.480 --> 00:01:36.239
Uh oh, that is wonderful, Brittany.

00:01:36.480 --> 00:01:40.640
And uh so um what are you hoping to take away from this conference?

00:01:40.719 --> 00:01:42.560
You're like, I came here, I'm gonna learn this.

00:01:42.879 --> 00:01:48.640
Yeah, so um I'm looking to take away a lot of connections, um networking.

00:01:48.799 --> 00:02:03.599
I've done a lot already, which has been wonderful, um, as well as learning just different um tangible tools I can take back to my location at Richmond Library Sand Hills, especially like readers advisory and how I can really engage with the community.

00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:05.280
Oh, that is wonderful.

00:02:05.680 --> 00:02:07.680
And uh uh that's great.

00:02:07.840 --> 00:02:12.319
Is there anything uh else you'd like to share with the SCLA community?

00:02:12.639 --> 00:02:14.719
Um, I would say keep going.

00:02:14.879 --> 00:02:25.360
Um there are so many amazing people that I've met just within the last few hours, and it's so uh wonderful to see how everyone's so passionate um and supportive of each other.

00:02:25.520 --> 00:02:33.199
So we're doing the great work out there, whether you're school, academic, public, um, and congratulations to all the amazing work you're doing.

00:02:33.439 --> 00:02:34.479
Oh, that's wonderful.

00:02:34.719 --> 00:02:37.759
Uh and let me ask you, uh, where where are you going to school?

00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:39.680
Um at University of South Carolina.

00:02:39.919 --> 00:02:40.319
USC.

00:02:40.639 --> 00:02:40.960
USC.

00:02:41.360 --> 00:02:41.840
Oh wow.

00:02:41.919 --> 00:02:43.520
Well, congratulations, that's wonderful.

00:02:44.080 --> 00:02:44.960
When do you graduate?

00:02:45.199 --> 00:02:49.360
Um, so I just started, so um, right now I'm projected for 2028.

00:02:49.599 --> 00:02:50.719
2028, okay.

00:02:50.800 --> 00:02:52.240
Is that a bachelor's, master's?

00:02:52.400 --> 00:02:52.960
It's masters.

00:02:53.280 --> 00:02:54.000
Oh, the master's.

00:02:54.319 --> 00:02:55.360
Okay, wonderful.

00:02:55.520 --> 00:02:56.319
2020.

00:02:56.639 --> 00:02:57.120
Congratulations.

00:02:57.280 --> 00:02:59.759
It's a journey, definitely worthwhile, well worth it.

00:02:59.840 --> 00:03:02.400
I remember going for my master's, it's you know it's a lot of work.

00:03:02.719 --> 00:03:04.719
So absolutely, but it's worth it.

00:03:04.800 --> 00:03:05.840
Yeah, absolutely.

00:03:06.240 --> 00:03:08.560
Well, once again, uh, thank you, Brittany Smith.

00:03:08.719 --> 00:03:18.000
Uh, Brittany is uh joining us uh from wonderful uh Richland County Sand Hills uh public school uh public library, and we're so happy to have you here today.

00:03:18.240 --> 00:03:19.360
