“Every child can read.” Mary from Hoke County Schools says it plainly, and then she shows the work behind making it real. We’re recording live from the NCRA conference, where she explains how a district literacy committee approaches professional learning like a mission: attend strategically, take excellent notes, then debrief as a team so the best ideas don’t stay in a notebook they show up in classrooms.

00:00:06.240 --> 00:00:09.279
Welcome to American Book Company Spotlight for Success.

00:00:09.439 --> 00:00:14.400
My name is Danielle, your host, and today we are at the NCRA conference.

00:00:14.800 --> 00:00:25.679
Our special guest today, Mary, joined us from Hoke County Schools, and she's just gonna give us a little rundown as to what brings her to NCRA today.

00:00:26.559 --> 00:00:28.079
Hi, nice to be here.

00:00:28.640 --> 00:00:33.679
Just being that lifelong learner, wanting to attend as many sessions as possible.

00:00:33.759 --> 00:00:38.880
So we have a district literacy committee, and um I brought some of the members with me.

00:00:38.960 --> 00:00:51.359
We're all attending as many sessions as we can, dividing and conquering, taking excellent notes, and then we're going to kind of debrief as a team to figure out how we can get the learning from here back into our district and transfer it into practice.

00:00:51.759 --> 00:00:52.399
Awesome.

00:00:52.560 --> 00:00:58.640
And what got you started in your current role as a K-5 ELA reading specialist?

00:00:59.280 --> 00:01:01.759
Um that's a trick question.

00:01:02.000 --> 00:01:06.879
I originally was not interested in this position at all because of what I thought it was.

00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:20.480
Um and when I was sent on the interview panel for this position as one of the people listening to the candidates, um, the team just kind of got into a discussion of what we wanted in the role.

00:01:20.560 --> 00:01:27.280
And as the team talked about coaching and building capacity and being in schools, I was like, you know, that sounds like something I actually would love to do.

00:01:27.359 --> 00:01:36.000
And we didn't find our fit that day, and so I applied and here I am trying to build capacity and improve student outcomes in my county.

00:01:36.239 --> 00:01:37.120
I love that.

00:01:37.439 --> 00:01:41.439
And what does success look like to your district?

00:01:42.000 --> 00:01:43.840
That every child can read.

00:01:45.599 --> 00:01:46.799
Quote that.

00:01:48.560 --> 00:01:50.719
Um let me think.

00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:56.719
What uh what are you looking forward to in your session specifically?

00:01:57.200 --> 00:02:11.599
Um we're kind of looking at um everything aligned with science of reading, but I think we're getting in a really good place this year with having those heart and mind shifts to embrace you know multiple standards coming out of rich, complex text.

00:02:11.919 --> 00:02:15.039
And so the next thing um is writing.

00:02:15.199 --> 00:02:20.639
How do we embed vocabulary writing to where we're able to communicate our ideas?

00:02:21.520 --> 00:02:26.159
Is there anything else you want to share with the NCRA community before we close out?

00:02:26.400 --> 00:02:26.960
I do.

00:02:27.039 --> 00:02:31.039
Um I just wanted to tell about some initiatives we have and the success.

00:02:31.199 --> 00:02:34.159
So there's four big pillars, I guess.

00:02:34.400 --> 00:02:43.680
The first one is communication, um, being able to clearly communicate what we expect and um what things will look like in the success and how it's gonna be measured.

00:02:43.840 --> 00:02:45.759
The second component of that is support.

00:02:45.919 --> 00:02:50.800
I never I don't believe that any teacher shows up to work being like, I'm not gonna do a great job today.

00:02:51.120 --> 00:02:54.960
Um a lot of times it's just because more support is needed.

00:02:55.199 --> 00:02:57.759
And then the next thing is monitoring.

00:02:57.919 --> 00:03:07.599
You know, we have to monitor what we're implementing so that we can have that continuous cycle of improvement, and then that takes us right back around to the communication and going through it again.

00:03:07.680 --> 00:03:11.280
So, with that, um you know the focus is always 3-5.

00:03:11.840 --> 00:03:14.080
How can we get the scores in 3-5?

00:03:14.719 --> 00:03:18.400
And it's never gonna happen if we don't get children to read K2.

00:03:18.800 --> 00:03:27.199
And so being able to produce readers so that by the time we get in those upper grades that they're actually reading to learn.

00:03:27.280 --> 00:03:35.759
Um, and with that, we've done those things, communicated, we've supported, we've done the monitoring and repeated the cycle for continuous improvement.

00:03:35.840 --> 00:03:37.599
And I just wanted to share some of the stats from that.

00:03:37.759 --> 00:03:41.919
From beginning of year to middle of year progress based on walkthrough data.

00:03:42.319 --> 00:03:54.479
Um, following the lesson structure and excuse me, following the lesson structure, internalizing the script for the program we use, which is Reading Horizons, increased from 21% to 82%.

00:03:55.199 --> 00:03:57.120
Just BOY to MOI.

00:03:57.360 --> 00:04:08.000
Additionally, um providing feedback and support because we know when students have that opportunity to practice that they need to receive that timely feedback, increased from 40% to 86%.

00:04:09.280 --> 00:04:32.319
Having posters available for the student and teacher to reference during the lesson increased from 36% to 40%, and then using kinesthetics, manipulatives, hand motions to engage the students increased from 36% to 67%, and being able to project their lessons so that the students have the visual increased from 69% to 91%.

00:04:32.959 --> 00:04:41.199
So I'm extremely proud of all of the work that our instructional leadership teams have done to buy in, and then all the work that the teachers have done.

00:04:41.279 --> 00:04:46.240
So we made a video, it's on YouTube for Hope County Schools reading Horizons Week.

00:04:46.399 --> 00:04:52.720
Um, but I'm just so proud of the work we're doing, and it's amazing to see the teachers teaching and children learning.

00:04:53.600 --> 00:05:00.079
I I'm so happy that your district is being successful with increasing their scores.

00:05:00.160 --> 00:05:01.040
That's amazing to hear.

00:05:02.160 --> 00:05:07.279
And thank you so much for joining us on our podcast, and I hope you have a great rest of your conference.

00:05:07.519 --> 00:05:08.079
Thank you.
