00:00:06.509 --> 00:00:08.872
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:08.872 --> 00:00:10.275
I'm Devin Pintosa, your host.

00:00:10.275 --> 00:00:16.071
We are here in sunny Alabama at the Alabama Federal Programs Conference.

00:00:16.071 --> 00:00:20.792
I am here with our special guest, melissa Scott, with Decatur City Schools.

00:00:20.792 --> 00:00:22.559
Melissa, welcome, thank you.

00:00:22.559 --> 00:00:26.550
All right, melissa, tell us a bit about your journey.

00:00:26.550 --> 00:00:29.832
What brings you to the Alabama Federal Programs Conference today?

00:00:30.274 --> 00:00:33.743
Well, I am the Federal Program Supervisor for Decatur City Schools.

00:00:33.743 --> 00:00:41.667
I've been in this position about five years, and so every year they have a conference to kind of update us on.

00:00:41.667 --> 00:00:50.012
You know, the various information, federal regulations and things like that that we need to make sure that our school is running properly and we're using federal funds the way we should be.

00:00:50.560 --> 00:00:52.808
Oh, that's very, very important.

00:00:53.100 --> 00:00:53.963
Very important.

00:00:53.984 --> 00:00:59.371
yes, yes, Can you tell us a bit about your journey into being federal programs director?

00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:02.439
Well, I've been in education about 30 years.

00:01:02.720 --> 00:01:03.101
I taught.

00:01:03.283 --> 00:01:03.625
English.

00:01:03.625 --> 00:01:07.147
I've been a cheer coach, I've been an assistant principal, a principal.

00:01:07.147 --> 00:01:29.146
I've done that on all levels elementary, middle and high and I've worked mostly in schools that were either title or in school improvement of some sort, or maybe even failed in school so a lot of my administrative experience was there or maybe even failed in school, so a lot of my administrative experience was there.

00:01:29.146 --> 00:01:32.768
So I've been able to take that into federal programs and actually use it to help schools improve.

00:01:32.787 --> 00:01:33.448
Oh, that is wonderful.

00:01:33.448 --> 00:01:36.131
Now I understand you've used American Book Company materials before.

00:01:36.251 --> 00:01:53.496
Yes, we have used American Book Company materials and actually our middle schools and Decatur City Schools have bought into using American Book Company's ACAP practice books and we have seen some growth there with our students, so we're very pleased with that product.

00:01:53.518 --> 00:01:53.799
Oh fantastic.

00:01:53.799 --> 00:02:00.132
Can you tell me a little bit about what you'd like to share with the Alabama Federal Programs community?

00:02:02.060 --> 00:02:11.775
Well, you know, when it comes to the ABC, ACAP practice books, I can tell you right now it's a very good tool for intervention for students.

00:02:11.775 --> 00:02:16.070
Our 6th, 7th and 8th grade students have actually been able to use those.

00:02:16.070 --> 00:02:19.649
We've been able to hire interventionists to go home and work with the students through books.

00:02:19.649 --> 00:02:25.352
So we are hoping that we can continue to see growth.

00:02:25.352 --> 00:02:32.944
So if you're a federal program supervisor or director out there and you're looking for an intervention tool to help your students, this is a good one to try.

00:02:34.520 --> 00:02:37.730
Well, thank you so much, Melissa Scott, for speaking with us today.

00:02:37.730 --> 00:02:43.072
Again, melissa Scott, federal programs director at Decatur City Schools, alabama, thank you so much.

00:02:43.340 --> 00:02:44.121
Thank you for having me.
