00:00:06.240 --> 00:00:10.080
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:10.240 --> 00:00:12.240
I am Devin Pintozi, your host.

00:00:12.400 --> 00:00:14.480
We are here at NCRA.

00:00:14.880 --> 00:00:18.079
Very excited to be here in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

00:00:18.239 --> 00:00:22.160
And we are here with our very special guest, uh Darren Farrell.

00:00:22.239 --> 00:00:24.000
Uh, Darren, thank you for joining us today.

00:00:24.320 --> 00:00:25.359
Thank you for having me.

00:00:25.600 --> 00:00:26.000
Yeah.

00:00:26.239 --> 00:00:29.519
Tell us a bit about what brings you here to NCRA.

00:00:29.839 --> 00:00:34.079
I'm here to take part in the author luncheon tomorrow.

00:00:34.240 --> 00:00:37.759
I'm gonna be sharing a little bit about my book Dandelion Magic.

00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:43.439
Um, just talking about where the idea comes from, and we're gonna have a good discussion tomorrow.

00:00:43.679 --> 00:00:44.880
Oh, okay, great.

00:00:45.039 --> 00:00:46.880
What got you into writing?

00:00:48.799 --> 00:00:54.320
So I would say I have always been a huge fan of words.

00:00:54.640 --> 00:00:54.960
Okay.

00:00:55.280 --> 00:01:01.119
As a baby, my mom and my grandmother used to be able to hold me and just read the dictionary.

00:01:01.359 --> 00:01:02.159
Oh, there you go.

00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:03.600
And I would stop crying.

00:01:03.759 --> 00:01:05.120
So I've always loved words.

00:01:05.200 --> 00:01:10.000
When I was when I was younger, I wanted to be I wanted to be like a rapper, a hip hop, hip-hop artist.

00:01:10.239 --> 00:01:20.799
And then that kind of morphed into like journalism school, uh finding my way into advertising, and then um just starting out with picture books.

00:01:20.879 --> 00:01:27.200
I've always loved these simple, clever ideas behind picture books.

00:01:27.439 --> 00:01:32.640
Um, and then I lived in New York City and I thought, let me try to write one of my own.

00:01:32.879 --> 00:01:34.400
And it was a long process.

00:01:34.640 --> 00:01:38.000
Um, this is my I'm on my eighth book right now.

00:01:38.239 --> 00:01:39.200
Oh wow, look at that.

00:01:39.519 --> 00:01:40.879
Uh it's been a journey.

00:01:41.120 --> 00:01:45.680
Um, but uh I think words have always just been a part of my life.

00:01:45.920 --> 00:01:47.359
Drawing comics.

00:01:47.599 --> 00:01:50.480
Um that's great.

00:01:50.640 --> 00:01:54.159
And uh so what what grade levels are is this book uh suited for?

00:01:54.400 --> 00:02:01.280
This is um Dandelion Magic is great for pre-K, kindergarten, first grade, you know, second and third grade.

00:02:01.359 --> 00:02:03.439
It's fun to do a read aloud with this book.

00:02:03.599 --> 00:02:05.840
Um as they get second, third, fourth.

00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:25.039
It's really interesting to take this book and have them create their own story, starting with the dandelion making a wish, and then how that wish could go awry, and where that adventure might take them, and then how how that crazy adventure kind of like turns into like a happy ending.

00:02:25.280 --> 00:02:41.840
And um, so that that the story of this book is sort of like a wish starts out, starts out positive, and then kind of goes off on a crazy tangent that sends the main character on an adventure and kind of like that story of how he makes it home safe in the evening.

00:02:41.919 --> 00:02:43.360
Yeah, that's great.

00:02:43.520 --> 00:02:46.240
And uh, how can people find out more about your books?

00:02:46.479 --> 00:02:47.919
Uh yeah, anywhere books are sold.

00:02:48.080 --> 00:02:50.719
Quail Ridge Books is uh my hometown bookstore.

00:02:50.800 --> 00:02:55.199
It's a great bookshop if you want to order this book, but you can find it literally anywhere.

00:02:55.439 --> 00:03:00.159
If you're part of the Imagination Library, it also uh is part of the Imagination Library.

00:03:00.240 --> 00:03:05.520
I think when your child turns three, they'll receive this book in the mail in March.

00:03:05.759 --> 00:03:07.280
Oh wow, look at that.

00:03:07.599 --> 00:03:08.879
That's very nice.

00:03:09.120 --> 00:03:10.719
Is that the one with uh Dolly Parton?

00:03:10.800 --> 00:03:12.719
I want to say Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

00:03:12.800 --> 00:03:13.280
It's a good one.

00:03:13.439 --> 00:03:15.599
Wow, that's awesome! That's great.

00:03:15.919 --> 00:03:16.319
Wow.

00:03:16.400 --> 00:03:20.159
Um, is there anything else you'd like to share with the NCRA community?

00:03:20.560 --> 00:03:25.919
Um I have a new book that just came out this year called Lion in Bed.

00:03:26.240 --> 00:03:34.479
So if you want a cuddly, snuggly book about a lion who won't get out of bed, maybe you have a child who uh has a hard time waking up in the morning.

00:03:34.560 --> 00:03:37.199
It's a really cute story, really cuddly ending.

00:03:37.280 --> 00:03:38.319
I won't spoil it.

00:03:38.560 --> 00:03:39.360
Oh, okay.

00:03:39.919 --> 00:03:41.280
That sounds really good.

00:03:41.520 --> 00:03:45.680
All right, once again, this is Darren Farrell uh joining us from NCRA.

00:03:45.919 --> 00:03:51.039
Um uh if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to him and uh uh have a good day.

00:03:51.360 --> 00:03:51.919
Bye bye.
