Connecting Through Technology

Connecting Through Technology

Ever wondered how technology bridges the silence for those who cannot speak? Melissa Pouncey takes us on a fascinating journey through the world of communication technology that's transforming lives every day.

Recorded at the Alabama Educational Technology Conference, this episode introduces us to Melissa's work with PRC Saltillo, a company developing breakthrough solutions for nonverbal and minimally verbal individuals. With 15 years of experience as a speech therapist, Melissa shares powerful insights into the profound impact these technologies have: "If you spend your life as someone who can't communicate with others, you can't connect, and giving someone that technology develops these really cool connections in someone's life."

WEBVTT

00:00:06.431 --> 00:00:09.095
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:09.095 --> 00:00:18.509
We're here at the Alabama Educational Technology Conference in sunny Mobile Alabama and we're here with our special guest, melissa Pouncey.

00:00:18.509 --> 00:00:19.591
Welcome, melissa.

00:00:19.739 --> 00:00:20.844
Yeah, thanks for having me.

00:00:20.844 --> 00:00:21.426
This is fun.

00:00:22.000 --> 00:00:25.751
Melissa is with PRC Saltilla, is that right?

00:00:25.751 --> 00:00:27.440
Yeah, you got it right.

00:00:27.440 --> 00:00:27.801
Good job, okay.

00:00:27.801 --> 00:00:33.393
All right, melissa, tell us a bit about your work with PRC and what brings you to this conference.

00:00:33.920 --> 00:00:48.930
Yeah, so PRC Saltillo is a communication technology company, so we are providing communication solutions for people who might be nonverbal or minimally verbal or just need some supplement for their verbal communication through a wide variety of ages.

00:00:48.930 --> 00:01:00.152
So here at the Alabama Educational Technology Conference we're really helping facilitate conversations around how communication technology could fit in classrooms and how it could be part of a classroom environment.

00:01:00.700 --> 00:01:02.469
Oh, that's wonderful, and I understand.

00:01:02.469 --> 00:01:08.709
You have some speakers here, some people that are speaking on, I think, referencing PRC, sartella and some of the things that y'all are doing.

00:01:08.950 --> 00:01:09.451
Yeah, for sure.

00:01:09.451 --> 00:01:17.420
There are some sessions where people are talking about communication technology, how to utilize it in classrooms, and they've sent a lot of fun people our way to the table.

00:01:17.420 --> 00:01:25.632
So we've gotten to connect with teachers, special ed coordinators, other people that might not be familiar and need some time to play with devices at our table.

00:01:26.112 --> 00:01:26.974
Oh, that's awesome.

00:01:27.575 --> 00:01:29.757
Thank you for watching Spotlight for Success.

00:01:29.757 --> 00:01:34.811
I am Devin Pintosi, chief Operating Officer of American Book Company.

00:01:34.811 --> 00:01:39.081
We are located here in our headquarters in Woodstock, georgia.

00:01:39.081 --> 00:01:43.045
All of our materials are printed in USA.

00:01:43.045 --> 00:01:55.117
We have course books, e-books and online testing in grades K-12 in mathematics, ela, science and social studies.

00:01:55.117 --> 00:02:03.575
These materials are all designed to help students achieve higher scores on their state-specific high-stakes assessments.

00:02:03.575 --> 00:02:06.727
We guarantee score improvement.

00:02:06.727 --> 00:02:15.748
You can get free samples of our materials either in print or in electronic formats at abck12.com.

00:02:15.748 --> 00:02:17.445
We look forward to hearing from you.

00:02:19.121 --> 00:02:23.712
So what got you involved with consulting with PRC Sartillo?

00:02:24.099 --> 00:02:34.524
Yeah, so I was a speech therapist for 15 years and I got to see firsthand what the magic of giving communication technology to someone could do in their life, right?

00:02:34.524 --> 00:02:45.784
So if you spend your life as someone who can't communicate with others, you can't connect, and giving someone that technology develops these really cool connections in someone's life and I got to see that firsthand.

00:02:45.784 --> 00:02:52.745
So when the opportunity came to have this position where I get to teach other speech therapists how to do that, I was all about it.

00:02:53.145 --> 00:02:55.010
Gosh, that sounds fantastic.

00:02:55.010 --> 00:03:00.699
Tell us a bit about your journey, like how did you become or decide you're going to go into speech therapy?

00:03:01.500 --> 00:03:04.227
Yeah, so I actually have a background in theater.

00:03:04.227 --> 00:03:16.352
Um and when I saw a speech therapist at work, what I realized was it's really just improv, so getting to have fun, make things up on the fly, um, but in a way that helps people, and I was really intrigued.

00:03:16.352 --> 00:03:26.222
So I have a theater background, got a master's in speech language, but speech language pathology which is a mouthful for anybody and then really just kind of took off from there.

00:03:26.704 --> 00:03:33.324
Wow, that is great, and tell me what you're hoping to get out of this conference today and tomorrow.

00:03:33.586 --> 00:03:37.078
Yeah, I think it's really just about meeting people, right.

00:03:37.078 --> 00:03:42.531
And having that opportunity to connect about what people might need and what surprises them.

00:03:42.531 --> 00:03:55.216
So what's been interesting is that, even though this might be a place for you know ed tech or we've met a lot of librarians or instructional technologists what we have found people asking about is their own family members.

00:03:55.216 --> 00:03:59.191
So you never know what somebody's story is when they come to talk to you.

00:03:59.191 --> 00:04:01.764
And that's been the best part is just hearing people's stories.

00:04:02.407 --> 00:04:03.411
Oh, that is wonderful.

00:04:03.411 --> 00:04:06.423
Well, thank you so much for speaking with us today.

00:04:06.443 --> 00:04:07.405
Thanks for having me.

00:04:07.405 --> 00:04:08.268
This has been really fun.

00:04:08.288 --> 00:04:11.343
Yeah, I'm Melissa Pouncey with PRC Saatilo.

00:04:11.343 --> 00:04:13.088
Thank you so much for joining us today.

00:04:13.169 --> 00:04:14.111
Thanks, awesome.
