00:00:06.530 --> 00:00:09.074
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:09.074 --> 00:00:10.739
I'm Devin Bintosi, your host.
00:00:10.739 --> 00:00:21.611
We are here at NCMLE, the North Carolina Mid-Level Educators Conference in Charlotte, north Carolina, and we are joined here by Mr Charles Williams.
00:00:21.611 --> 00:00:27.710
Charles joins us from Chicago Public Schools and he is a motivational speaker here with.
00:00:27.710 --> 00:00:29.472
Is it CW Productions?
00:00:29.472 --> 00:00:30.714
Cw Consulting?
00:00:30.714 --> 00:00:32.606
Cw Consulting.
00:00:32.606 --> 00:00:33.408
Welcome, charles.
00:00:33.408 --> 00:00:34.442
Yeah, thank you for having me.
00:00:34.482 --> 00:00:36.369
I appreciate the opportunity to connect.
00:00:37.341 --> 00:00:39.444
No problem, we're very excited to have you here.
00:00:39.444 --> 00:00:42.789
I'd like to know from you, charles, what brings you to NCMLE.
00:00:42.789 --> 00:00:43.911
To know from you, charles, what brings you to.
00:00:43.930 --> 00:00:44.070
NCMLE.
00:00:44.070 --> 00:00:46.515
So David, david, david James brings me here.
00:00:46.515 --> 00:00:52.904
I was a featured speaker last year.
00:00:52.904 --> 00:00:54.490
David reached out, asked me to be here and it was a phenomenal experience.
00:00:54.490 --> 00:00:59.591
And so when he reached out again to say, hey, we want you back, I said, absolutely, this is my spring break back in Chicago.
00:00:59.591 --> 00:01:09.292
So the idea that I was like, yeah, I'll spend my spring break, or at least part of it, in Charlotte at a conference, I think speaks volumes to the value of this conference.
00:01:09.371 --> 00:01:14.588
But just to be able to be in the space oh, that's wonderful and so I understand you were presenting here.
00:01:14.588 --> 00:01:15.090
Is that right?
00:01:15.260 --> 00:01:15.561
I am.
00:01:15.561 --> 00:01:23.183
I had a session this morning, a two hour session, ok, you know, and then I was on a panel last night Fantastic.
00:01:23.364 --> 00:01:27.528
So tell us about the things that you're discussing with the community here at NCMLE.
00:01:27.929 --> 00:01:28.448
Yeah.
00:01:28.448 --> 00:01:36.156
So David asked me to do an equity workshop, and so this is typically something that is done, at least a full-day workshop.
00:01:36.156 --> 00:01:53.246
It is based on a framework that I helped to build back in Chicago for the Chicago Public Schools, and so it was a two-hour workshop here to be more of an introduction, but looking at these four different domains to figure out how do we move from just talking about doing the work to actually doing it.
00:01:53.246 --> 00:01:59.284
So many times you have people who are saying, hey, I know this work is important, I want to do it, but I don't know where to begin.
00:01:59.284 --> 00:02:06.903
I don't know where to start, and so providing a framework allows people to actually begin diving in and really being active.
00:02:10.246 --> 00:02:12.271
Oh, okay, so tell us a bit about.
00:02:12.271 --> 00:02:13.615
I understand that you're a principal.
00:02:13.615 --> 00:02:14.176
Is that correct?
00:02:14.176 --> 00:02:15.086
Yeah, yeah.
00:02:15.167 --> 00:02:16.971
So I'm an assistant principal now.
00:02:16.971 --> 00:02:20.086
I sat in the principal seat for about eight, nine years.
00:02:20.086 --> 00:02:23.816
I dropped back to be an assistant principal so I can do this sort of work.
00:02:23.816 --> 00:02:27.395
It's really, really hard to run a school and be gone all the time.
00:02:27.765 --> 00:02:29.772
Oh yeah, I imagine that would be a problem right.
00:02:30.145 --> 00:02:32.808
Yeah, a little bit of a challenge, a little bit of a challenge.
00:02:32.829 --> 00:02:40.941
So tell us some of the things that go on in your school that you have made part of, what you discuss with other educators as you go around the United States.
00:02:43.544 --> 00:02:44.527
Yeah, I think there are so many different things.
00:02:44.527 --> 00:02:46.332
I think that's one of the things that we were talking about earlier.
00:02:46.332 --> 00:02:54.472
You know is this idea that I'm speaking from a space of practicality, right, when I'm presenting at a conference, you know, a day, day or two later I'm back in the building.
00:02:54.472 --> 00:03:00.448
So I'm not just talking about it from an idea, a space of theory, or this is what I used to do 10, 15, 20 years ago.
00:03:00.448 --> 00:03:13.871
This is the work that I'm currently doing, and so, when we talk about, like, the example of leaning into the concept of essentialism and recognizing what it means to be a leader and being okay with pushing things away, that's the work that I'm actually doing.
00:03:14.211 --> 00:03:23.705
When we talk about providing opportunities for students, right, and I talk about experiential learning, providing those experiences for students those are things that we're actually doing.
00:03:23.705 --> 00:03:28.986
And so at our school, michelle Clark, on the very far west side of Chicago, we're in the Austin neighborhood.
00:03:28.986 --> 00:03:57.105
It is a neighborhood that is your textbook urban space, right, there's a lot of issues plaguing the neighborhood, but a lot of opportunities as well, and so we're trying to figure out how do we make sure that our students have access to the same, you know, opportunities, resources, tools, experiences that schools from all across the district have, and so it's challenging work, but we're seeing the wonderful, the wonderful outcomes of doing that work.
00:03:57.126 --> 00:03:58.308
Wow, that is amazing.
00:03:58.789 --> 00:04:10.390
Tell us a bit about, uh, you understand, you also have some materials, some books that you wrote yeah, so, um, I I fortunately I've been a contributing author to a number of things, in fact, uh, this past weekend.
00:04:10.390 --> 00:04:17.192
Uh, there was a book that came out Friday and then a book that came out Monday and then a book that came out Monday, and I have contributing chapters in both of those.
00:04:17.252 --> 00:04:17.613
Oh, wow.
00:04:17.613 --> 00:04:22.533
And then of course there's— You're prolific, yeah, I'm just a little busy a little busy, I guess so.
00:04:23.165 --> 00:04:23.930
And then there's this book.
00:04:23.930 --> 00:04:39.225
It's about three years old at this point, but this was my first publication called Inside the Principal's Office, and it was called that I call that.
00:04:39.225 --> 00:04:40.389
I think sometimes people get thrown off by the title.
00:04:40.389 --> 00:04:41.875
They're like, oh, it's for principals, like no, it's for school leaders.
00:04:41.875 --> 00:04:43.119
And in fact it's designed in a way for not to be full of.
00:04:43.119 --> 00:04:43.880
You know, it's not a dissertation.
00:04:43.880 --> 00:04:52.956
It's real experiences followed up with some reflection questions focusing on different domains, like how do we embrace celebrations, how do we embrace the concept of being the lead learner in our school, right?
00:04:52.956 --> 00:05:01.887
And so at the end of every chapter or week because you can read it week by week, you know there's some reflection pieces that you can dive deeper into.
00:05:01.887 --> 00:05:12.649
So great for a brand new leader trying to figure out how do I navigate the space, or even for that veteran leader who's gotten so caught up in their routines and maybe have forgotten what they're doing and why they're doing it.
00:05:12.649 --> 00:05:17.858
So it's a great text, a little biased because I wrote it, but it's a great, great text.
00:05:18.444 --> 00:05:27.716
Can you share an experience from the classroom or from your school setting where you felt like the light bulb moment happened, whether it was for faculty or it was for student population?
00:05:28.386 --> 00:05:32.473
At American Book Company in Woodstock, georgia, we are committed to your students' success.
00:05:32.473 --> 00:05:40.098
As you can see behind me, we have our workbooks and we have online testing and e-books that go on fancy iPads over here, for instance.
00:05:40.098 --> 00:05:46.107
They're all designed to help your students succeed and have higher test scores on their high-stakes assessments.
00:05:46.107 --> 00:05:57.187
Give us a call 888-264-5877, or find us on the web, abck12.com and you can receive a free trial or a free preview book of your choice.
00:05:57.187 --> 00:05:58.947
Hope to hear from you soon.
00:05:58.947 --> 00:05:59.449
Bye-bye.
00:06:00.670 --> 00:06:13.423
Yeah, so you know, one of the stories that I share and I think it's in this book is we had this policy where we weren't supposed to have food in the hallways Right, mostly because you know if you're a teacher or anybody, we weren't running through the hallway with a hot cup of coffee.
00:06:13.423 --> 00:06:15.009
Right, bad things happen.
00:06:15.009 --> 00:06:24.113
But you know, I would do my morning rounds and every morning one of my last stops was the cafeteria, because my cafeteria staff always had a cup of coffee and a pastry for me.
00:06:24.113 --> 00:06:24.673
Oh, nice.
00:06:24.694 --> 00:06:27.276
Because you got to take care of your cafeteria staff.
00:06:27.456 --> 00:06:27.716
Yeah.
00:06:28.175 --> 00:06:38.720
So I remember I was on my way to a meeting, I was rushing back, and so, of course, now I'm picking at my food as I'm moving through the hallways and one of the students sees me in the hallway and says hey, mr Williams, like what are you doing?
00:06:38.720 --> 00:06:39.860
You're not supposed to have food in the hallway.
00:06:39.860 --> 00:06:44.101
And I remember there was a teacher there who was like hey, you don't speak to him that way.
00:06:44.101 --> 00:06:47.103
And I said no, no, no, you know the student's right.
00:06:47.103 --> 00:06:49.324
We have an expectation as a school.
00:06:49.324 --> 00:06:54.726
It's not a student expectation, it is an expectation for the school, and I am no different.
00:06:54.726 --> 00:07:05.884
In fact, I should be leaning into that space and modeling what it is that we're expecting, and so I thank the student for reminding me of our school-wide expectations and policies.
00:07:05.903 --> 00:07:15.060
And it was just this kind of aha moment, right as we talk about student voice and empowerment, like, yeah, you also have a voice in this space, and so it wasn't just something that we were talking about, we were actually living.
00:07:15.509 --> 00:07:16.536
Oh, that is awesome.
00:07:16.536 --> 00:07:21.480
What a great experience so for your book how people find out about your book.
00:07:21.750 --> 00:07:21.889
Yeah.
00:07:21.889 --> 00:07:24.798
So I mean, people can access me all sorts of ways.
00:07:24.798 --> 00:07:28.322
I used to joke with students when Google was becoming a thing.
00:07:28.322 --> 00:07:29.086
You know.
00:07:29.086 --> 00:07:30.211
They were like we're going to Google you.
00:07:30.211 --> 00:07:31.374
I was like, yeah, okay, go ahead.
00:07:31.374 --> 00:07:32.317
Like you never find me.
00:07:32.317 --> 00:07:34.029
Uh, now that's a little bit different.
00:07:34.029 --> 00:07:36.312
Now, if you Google me, you'll find me.
00:07:36.312 --> 00:07:38.555
Uh, but you can find me on the website.
00:07:38.555 --> 00:07:40.858
Uh, cw consulting servicecom.
00:07:40.858 --> 00:07:48.846
Uh, you can find me all across social media at underscore CW consulting, and so you'll be able to access this text as well as all the other materials that I have to offer.
00:07:49.331 --> 00:07:50.555
Oh, that is fantastic.
00:07:50.555 --> 00:07:52.605
Can you tell us a little bit about I understand?
00:07:52.605 --> 00:08:00.012
You had a recent experience that was like uh, really, uh, uh prescient, uh, I guess you had a moment uh, up in the air.
00:08:00.213 --> 00:08:01.274
Yeah, yeah, it was.
00:08:01.274 --> 00:08:05.636
Uh, it was a moment so about three years ago, when I first joined the district.
00:08:05.636 --> 00:08:08.057
And talk about an initiation moment.
00:08:08.057 --> 00:08:18.103
So our school has a JROTC program and so we have a very close relationship with the United States Army and so they said, hey, listen, we've got this great opportunity to go skydiving.
00:08:18.103 --> 00:08:21.365
Now that has been something that has been on my bucket list and I was like sure, why not?
00:08:21.365 --> 00:08:21.605
Bucket list?
00:08:21.605 --> 00:08:22.865
And I was like sure why not?
00:08:22.865 --> 00:08:26.867
And so, yeah, we went, we went skydiving.
00:08:26.867 --> 00:08:33.523
I joked, you know, my daughter was with me, my youngest daughter, and it was like she was going to be the last person to ever see me alive on this earth.
00:08:33.523 --> 00:08:37.735
But it was just this incredible, incredible experience, you know we.
00:08:39.373 --> 00:09:06.698
So the door opened to the airplane, right, you kind of squat down because it's a tiny plane and you do this like kind of little duck crab, walk to the edge and you have to count down backwards three, two, one, and at one you jump and for those first few I'm sure it's like five seconds, but it felt like five minutes You're falling as a free fall, right, and you know you're waiting for the parachute to catch is a free fall right, and you know you're, you're waiting for the parachute to catch.
00:09:06.698 --> 00:09:15.995
And I think the beautiful thing was, once that parachute caught, I was able to pause and kind of look around and I remember the guy attached to my back because you know they're, they're with you, I wasn't by myself and he said listen, you have two choices.
00:09:15.995 --> 00:09:19.850
We could either just go down now that we're up here, or we could take the scenic route.
00:09:19.850 --> 00:09:21.871
You know, we could kind of move around a little bit, let you see.
00:09:21.871 --> 00:09:32.798
And it was like, well, we're already here, let's see, right, and I think it's one of these powerful moments like even that can be a testament to the work that we do, like you got to take the leap.
00:09:33.339 --> 00:09:35.779
That is an experience that I never would have ever had.
00:09:35.779 --> 00:09:46.605
You know, I had to push back against every fiber of my being to do this thing right, and I think sometimes we find ourselves in very uncomfortable situations that we do have to push back against.
00:09:46.605 --> 00:09:55.533
And you know, literally in my case, take that leap right.
00:09:55.533 --> 00:09:57.541
And so now I have an experience that I would never have had anywhere else.
00:09:57.541 --> 00:10:00.491
I could have done the indoor flying thing, I could have done a simulator and nothing would have compared.
00:10:00.491 --> 00:10:22.081
So I think that that you know for me anyway right, and I tell other people, like, even if you're not jumping out of an airplane, when you find yourself in that place where you don't know whether or not to take the proverbial leap, like do it right because you I mean, in most cases you're probably not going to crash to the ground and die a horrible death, but like you're going to have an experience that you probably would never have had otherwise.
00:10:22.090 --> 00:10:24.855
That is wow, that is quite the thing and very awesome that you were able to have an experience that you probably would never have had otherwise.
00:10:24.855 --> 00:10:29.847
That is wow, that is quite the thing and very awesome that you were able to do that and check another thing off the bucket list there.
00:10:29.908 --> 00:10:30.429
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:10:30.429 --> 00:10:31.813
I don't know if I would ever do it again.
00:10:31.813 --> 00:10:34.602
I checked it off, I'm good, good.
00:10:35.691 --> 00:10:39.020
Is there anything else you'd like to share with the NCMLE community?
00:10:39.260 --> 00:10:55.395
Yeah, I think that, just if you ever have an opportunity to be at this conference, it's an incredible experience, the amounts of educators who come on out you know you've got the featured speakers from all over the country who come out and just connect with one another but also to provide and just the dynamic space.
00:10:55.395 --> 00:11:03.163
I go to a lot of conferences, a lot, and this is probably one of my favorites to be at, so I'm hoping that I'll be here again next year.
00:11:03.163 --> 00:11:05.649
I just think that this is a great opportunity.
00:11:05.649 --> 00:11:11.981
If you're looking to learn, to lead and to grow with like-minded educators, this is a place to be.
00:11:13.004 --> 00:11:13.946
Awesome.
00:11:13.946 --> 00:11:16.558
Once again, thank you, charles Williams.
00:11:16.558 --> 00:11:20.255
Charles Williams with CW Consulting, thank you so much for joining us today.
00:11:20.255 --> 00:11:21.211
I appreciate you having me.
