Cloudy Skies & Clear Gains

Cloudy Skies & Clear Gains

Ever wonder what flips the switch from “I don’t get it” to “I can explain it”? We sit down with educator and leader Miranda Stockton in a bustling corridor at the Continuous Improvement Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, to trace how a college love for chemistry became a mission to make learning tangible. Miranda shares the moments that changed her practice—watching students light up during hands-on labs, designing tasks that demand explanation, and leaning into NGSS-style standards that reward application over memorization.

00:00:29.120 --> 00:00:29.920
There we go.

Miranda, you join us uh from the uh Stockton County High School.

00:00:33.840 --> 00:00:34.880
Is that Clinton County?

00:00:35.280 --> 00:00:37.759
Clinton, Gobledogs, Gobledogs.

00:00:38.079 --> 00:00:39.359
Clinton County High School.

00:00:39.520 --> 00:00:40.960
So uh that's wonderful.

00:00:41.119 --> 00:00:44.159
Uh I'd like to know uh bit about your educational journey.

00:00:44.320 --> 00:00:49.600
What decided you uh what what made you decide to become uh uh go into education?

00:00:50.159 --> 00:01:14.959
Well, uh thinking back first, that wasn't my first career choice at the beginning, but I clearly had a love for chemistry when I uh was doing my c in my college career, and I realized no that I think I want to inspire other students to have that same love and the love for science and experiencing science the way I did.

00:01:15.519 --> 00:01:17.920
Thank you for watching Spotlight for Success.

00:01:18.079 --> 00:01:23.040

We look forward to hearing from you.

00:02:06.879 --> 00:02:08.319
To be engaged with it.

00:02:08.719 --> 00:02:09.520
That's great.

00:02:09.680 --> 00:02:16.719
And uh do you have any special moments uh when you were uh teaching students that you felt like, gosh, this is why I got into education?

00:02:17.039 --> 00:02:17.840
Oh, absolutely.

00:02:18.000 --> 00:02:26.560
When you f when you see a student connect with with what you're uh with the hands-on, specifically in science, that was like a key factor.

00:02:26.800 --> 00:02:30.960
Understanding the why was such an eye-opener.

00:02:31.280 --> 00:02:38.879
Of course, it's been a while I've moved out of the classroom, uh, and so I see it from a completely different perspective now, but it doesn't change.

00:02:38.960 --> 00:02:43.199
It's it's them seeing those that are inspired and engaged.

00:02:43.599 --> 00:02:44.400
That's wonderful.

00:02:44.560 --> 00:02:51.120
Have you enjoyed the transition as Kentucky has moved into the NGSS uh style standards?

00:02:51.439 --> 00:02:52.400
Yes, yes.

00:02:52.719 --> 00:02:54.319
Yeah, more practical application.

00:02:54.560 --> 00:02:55.120
Absolutely.

00:02:55.360 --> 00:02:56.560
Yeah, that's that's great.

00:02:56.639 --> 00:03:09.280
I've I've appreciated uh working with those materials myself in the company, and then just seeing uh seeing all the practical applications being added into the science, I think makes it so much more relevant.

00:03:09.840 --> 00:03:17.280
Um can you tell me a bit, Monica, about uh I understand that um uh during your career you've used ABC materials in the past?

00:03:17.599 --> 00:03:18.319
Yes, we have.

00:03:18.400 --> 00:03:37.199
Uh we actually had a big decline in our social studies, and then we had sought out different sources for high quality resources, and ABC was one of those that we rolled out and then saw a big jump that very next year after utilizing the materials.

00:03:37.520 --> 00:03:38.319
That's wonderful.

00:03:38.479 --> 00:03:39.439
So happy to hear that.

00:03:39.520 --> 00:03:41.120
And that was with the the KSA books?

00:03:41.280 --> 00:03:42.560
That was with our KSA books.

00:03:42.879 --> 00:03:43.280
Wonderful.

00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:45.039
That's so great.

00:03:45.199 --> 00:03:53.199
Um is there anything you'd like to uh is there anything uh you hope to take away from this conference that you could share with the Oh absolutely.

00:03:53.280 --> 00:04:04.800
It's connecting, making connections with other people while you're here, looking at best practices, seeing what others are doing, what's working, and the challenges that they face, and and just connecting in that way.

00:04:04.879 --> 00:04:12.319
That way we can maybe overcome our challenges that we're seeing by doing some of the things that other schools and districts are doing.

00:04:12.639 --> 00:04:14.319
Oh, that is so wonderful.

00:04:14.479 --> 00:04:15.120
Uh wow.

00:04:15.199 --> 00:04:18.959
Well, I really appreciated uh you being able to come on to speak with us today.

00:04:19.279 --> 00:04:21.279
Again, this is Monica Stockton.

00:04:21.439 --> 00:04:24.160
She comes to us uh Miranda.

00:04:24.319 --> 00:04:24.639
It's okay.

00:04:24.959 --> 00:04:29.759
Miranda, this is Miranda Stockton coming to us from uh Clinton High School.

00:04:30.000 --> 00:04:31.680
Thank you for joining us today, Miranda.

00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:32.319
Thank you.

00:04:32.560 --> 00:04:33.439
Bye bye.
