00:00:06.570 --> 00:00:09.455
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.

00:00:09.455 --> 00:00:16.173
We are here in Charlotte at the North Carolina Mid-Level Educators Conference.

00:00:16.173 --> 00:00:18.067
I am Devin Pintosi, your host.

00:00:18.067 --> 00:00:20.768
We are here with Brad Rue.

00:00:20.768 --> 00:00:25.248
Brad Rue is the Science and STEM Coordinator with Guilford County Schools.

00:00:25.248 --> 00:00:25.969
That's correct.

00:00:25.969 --> 00:00:26.792
Welcome, Brad.

00:00:27.132 --> 00:00:27.934
Thank you for having me.

00:00:28.179 --> 00:00:32.892
Yes, brad, tell us a bit about what brings you today to NCMLE.

00:00:33.479 --> 00:00:38.192
So I'm here kind of two-folded One as the Science and STEM Coordinator in Guilford County.

00:00:38.192 --> 00:01:02.679
This is a great way for me to connect with other science leaders across our state as well as see what are some new things that are coming out, especially with our new science standards, to see how other districts are promoting the standards and what resources and materials they're using to really get their teachers and students involved with the science and engineering practices, but also as the president-elect for the North Carolina Science Teachers Association.

00:01:02.679 --> 00:01:14.572
We are also here promoting our association and really hoping to get more science teachers to come to our conference and be a bigger part of our science network that we have across the state.

00:01:14.980 --> 00:01:16.566
And when is that conference coming up?

00:01:17.521 --> 00:01:20.448
The conference is November 6th and 7th in Winston-Salem.

00:01:21.611 --> 00:01:26.162
Okay, november 6th and 7th in Winston-Salem, wonderful, and that's for all the science teachers.

00:01:26.302 --> 00:01:38.727
All the science teachers, kindergarten through college level, because we have sessions for elementary science, middle, high school and also for pre-service teachers on how to be a phenomenal science teacher when they enter the classroom.

00:01:39.067 --> 00:01:43.347
Oh, that's fantastic, and tell us a little bit about your career journey.

00:01:43.347 --> 00:01:47.143
You're now now a curriculum coordinator at district.

00:01:47.143 --> 00:01:50.674
What did you do previous to that and how did you end up in this role?

00:01:50.715 --> 00:02:12.044
yeah, so I started my career as a middle school science and social studies teachers in Walkertown, north Carolina, in outside of Winston, did that for a while and then transitioned to elementary school and worked at Cook Literacy Model School when they were going through a restart to really promote science and STEM for elementary kids and get them excited about science.

00:02:12.044 --> 00:02:40.294
And then I spent the last few years at Petrie Elementary in Winston building a science and STEM program and about a year and a half ago this job opportunity at Guilford came open as the K-8 science and STEM coordinator and I was like this is a great chance for me to now take what I've been doing at the school level, but also to now expand to the district level and get other teachers and other principals and curriculum facilitators excited and passionate about science in their schools.

00:02:40.996 --> 00:02:49.574
Do you have a special moment you can share with the audience about some time where you felt like the light bulb clicked, whether that was with students or with faculty?

00:02:49.574 --> 00:02:54.812
At American Book Company in Woodstock, georgia, we are committed to your students' success.

00:02:54.812 --> 00:03:02.433
As you can see behind me, we have our workbooks and we have online testing and e-books that go on fancy iPads over here, for instance.

00:03:02.433 --> 00:03:08.449
They're all designed to help your students succeed and have higher test scores on their high stakes assessments.

00:03:08.449 --> 00:03:19.543
Give us a call 888-264-5877, or find us on the web, abck12.com, and you can receive a free trial or a free preview book of your choice.

00:03:19.543 --> 00:03:21.270
Hope to hear from you soon.

00:03:21.270 --> 00:03:21.792
Bye-bye.

00:03:23.194 --> 00:03:42.187
Yeah, there's a lot of light bulb moments, but I think one of the biggest ones is when I've sat in professional learning communities with teachers especially teachers who are a little bit reluctant at first about teaching science and just the oh I don't have time reading and math kind of take over.

00:03:42.247 --> 00:03:58.085
Nothing against reading and math, but just really like working with a group of teachers and seeing as we go through the standards and we talk about how the science and engineering practices also support ELA and math and how their science standards is how you get kids excited.

00:03:58.085 --> 00:03:59.307
Kids love science.

00:03:59.307 --> 00:04:04.754
So if you get them excited about science, this is a great way to also incorporate ELA and math into it.

00:04:04.754 --> 00:04:14.981
And just watching teachers go from that reluctant like oh, I don't think I can do this, to oh my gosh, I can't wait till tomorrow to incorporate this into my classroom and just really take off with it.

00:04:14.981 --> 00:04:17.475
And that's where I've seen the biggest results is.

00:04:17.475 --> 00:04:27.605
Once my teachers buy in and they see how important teaching science is, then you see it happen in their classroom and you see the passion, you see the engagement just really take off and that's where our scores grow.

00:04:28.266 --> 00:04:29.208
That is awesome.

00:04:29.208 --> 00:04:33.444
That's awesome and I understand you've used American Book Company books in the past.

00:04:33.584 --> 00:04:33.826
Yes.

00:04:33.826 --> 00:05:00.002
So when I was still a classroom teacher, I used American Book Company to supplement my science instruction because it was always a great tool for our students to just get some good informational text, also some questioning stems, to really kind of build on what I was doing through the hands-on pieces in the classroom and then, as I've moved into, like you know, science coach, stem coach role at school levels and then now at the district level.

00:05:00.002 --> 00:05:06.807
It's definitely a book that I'm still promoting because I know how greatly allotted it is to our new North Carolina science standards.

00:05:07.255 --> 00:05:10.345
And it's also really pushing that science and engineering practice piece.

00:05:11.035 --> 00:05:12.341
Oh, fantastic, that's great.

00:05:12.341 --> 00:05:15.064
That applied science is all part of that.

00:05:15.064 --> 00:05:19.380
New NGSS standards Right, absolutely, as well as the North Carolina standards.

00:05:19.380 --> 00:05:20.865
That's wonderful.

00:05:20.865 --> 00:05:26.447
Brad, do you have anything you'd like to share with NCMLE that you'd like as a takeaway from this conference?

00:05:26.915 --> 00:05:28.435
Other than this is a great conference.

00:05:28.435 --> 00:05:30.281
It's a great networking opportunity.

00:05:30.281 --> 00:05:41.737
I mean, even though I live in the science world, it's just great to connect with other disciplines and other people at different leadership areas and really just see how we all collaborate and network together to do what's best for our teachers and students.

00:05:41.976 --> 00:05:42.999
That's wonderful, Brad.

00:05:42.999 --> 00:05:44.380
Well, thank you so much.

00:05:44.380 --> 00:05:46.244
This is Brad Rue.

00:05:46.244 --> 00:05:48.307
He is with Guilford County.

00:05:48.307 --> 00:05:52.762
He is the curriculum coordinator for science and STEM.

00:05:52.762 --> 00:05:54.827
Thank you so much for joining us today, no problem, thank you.
