00:00:06.320 --> 00:00:09.279
Welcome to Spotlight for Success by American Book Company.
00:00:09.359 --> 00:00:11.199
I am Devin Pintozi, your host.
00:00:11.839 --> 00:00:17.440
We are here at NCRA in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
00:00:17.760 --> 00:00:22.879
I'm happy to have with us our very special guest, uh Joe Watson Hockle.
00:00:23.679 --> 00:00:25.519
Hockle, nice to meet you today, Joe.
00:00:26.239 --> 00:00:26.399
Thank you.
00:00:26.559 --> 00:00:27.280
Thank you for having me.
00:00:27.600 --> 00:00:27.839
Yes.
00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:33.280
Uh Joe, can you tell us a little bit about um uh what brings you here to NCRA?
00:00:33.679 --> 00:00:35.039
Absolutely, thank you.
00:00:35.359 --> 00:00:43.679
So I am an author of SmackDab in the Middle of Maybe, published by Random House, Year Lean Adventures, and I'm also a first-generation college graduate.
00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:47.439
And so educators literally change my life.
00:00:47.679 --> 00:00:56.640
And so um one of the great joys about being an author, in addition to writing and visiting with uh students, is getting to visit with educators.
00:00:56.799 --> 00:01:08.640
So anytime I have the opportunity to interact with educators and learn what's on their mind and ways that I can better serve them by creating more resources for them, I'm delighted to do so.
00:01:08.959 --> 00:01:09.920
Oh, that's great.
00:01:10.159 --> 00:01:11.599
And uh can you tell me a bit?
00:01:11.680 --> 00:01:14.400
I understand, are you doing a couple sessions here at the conference?
00:01:14.799 --> 00:01:15.120
Yes.
00:01:15.439 --> 00:01:15.760
Okay.
00:01:16.159 --> 00:01:17.359
So what are those?
00:01:17.680 --> 00:01:28.719
So today I um presented on Nature Meets the Wild, um, the wild meets uh AI and the intersection between the power of nature.
00:01:28.879 --> 00:01:36.560
We all know that science supports the the importance for both physical and mental well-being of students engaging with nature.
00:01:36.719 --> 00:01:41.599
We also know that AI is becoming more and more a part of students' lives.
00:01:41.760 --> 00:01:54.480
And so I wanted to examine ways that we could responsibly use AI to help students connect with nature and use nature as a prompt for writing and reading to get the students more engaged.
00:01:54.879 --> 00:01:56.159
Oh, that sounds very interesting.
00:01:56.480 --> 00:01:56.719
Thank you.
00:01:57.040 --> 00:01:59.680
Wow, and uh what was the other presentation on?
00:02:00.239 --> 00:02:07.439
The other one is engaging student curiosity, uh supplemented with AI to really get students engaged.
00:02:07.519 --> 00:02:16.159
We know that after COVID, um, many students have learning gaps, and uh what I'm hearing from my educator friends is that engagement is critical.
00:02:16.240 --> 00:02:24.000
And the science shows that if you can get students engaged and motivated, they're so much ready, more ready to learn.
00:02:24.639 --> 00:02:45.919
And and so uh similarly to the nature topic, it starts with identifying what students are interested in, what they're curious about, and then looks for ways to create individualized assignments uh in writing projects that are really tailored to those students' interests to again build upon their interests, get them engaged.
00:02:46.240 --> 00:02:47.360
Oh, that's wonderful.
00:02:47.520 --> 00:02:53.280
Uh can you tell me, Joe, uh a bit about uh your book and how you came about to write it?
00:02:53.759 --> 00:02:54.000
Sure.
00:02:54.159 --> 00:03:04.719
So SmackDab in the middle of Maybe combines outdoor adventure with a southern art and mystery clue trail, all set in an overgrown ghost town based on a real-life southern ghost town in which I grew up.
00:03:05.680 --> 00:03:06.560
Where did you grow up?
00:03:06.879 --> 00:03:09.759
I grew up in rural, rural Mississippi.
00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:10.080
Okay.
00:03:10.319 --> 00:03:14.319
In a in a real-life ghost town, but I did all the research for the book in the Carolinas.
00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:15.439
I live in the Carolinas.
00:03:15.919 --> 00:03:16.080
Okay.
00:03:16.319 --> 00:03:16.479
Yeah.
00:03:16.719 --> 00:03:21.599
So it combines, um, it has steam tie-ins uh across the curriculum.
00:03:21.759 --> 00:03:41.840
Uh, the main character survives on her own in this deserted ghost town, so you might imagine lots of opportunities for science, mathematics, engineering, and um and other uh steam topics as this character is trying to survive on her own and solve a clue trail left by a very mysterious artist with a logic all his own.
00:03:42.080 --> 00:03:43.360
Oh wow, that's interesting.
00:03:43.520 --> 00:03:46.960
And can you tell us about the grade levels this uh book is directed for?
00:03:47.360 --> 00:03:47.520
Sure.
00:03:47.599 --> 00:03:51.360
So it it does have layers, so it works really well for grades three and up.
00:03:51.680 --> 00:03:52.319
Three and up.
00:03:52.560 --> 00:03:57.919
And um, so a grade three is going to get really hone in for the adventure.
00:03:58.159 --> 00:04:06.879
It uh also has a mental health component, and so middle grades will be more attuned to that, and then high school students, it did win the Southern Book Prize.
00:04:07.120 --> 00:04:07.439
Oh wow.
00:04:07.680 --> 00:04:16.319
So um high school students will read it as a literature study, and I do tons of visits, uh, author visits with you know ranging from third grade up to high school.
00:04:16.639 --> 00:04:17.439
Oh, that's great.
00:04:17.600 --> 00:04:27.600
Can you tell us a story about um how you felt the book uh impacted someone in in your life or someone you heard about or told you, man, I read SmackDab, and wow.
00:04:28.480 --> 00:04:32.480
Um I've had one student read SmackDab 14 times.
00:04:32.720 --> 00:04:33.040
What?
00:04:33.199 --> 00:04:34.800
I know that was amazing.
00:04:35.040 --> 00:04:40.480
But and I've um I love to visit particularly Title I schools.
00:04:40.639 --> 00:04:40.959
Okay.
00:04:41.360 --> 00:04:50.639
And um visited one school where the students, I was the first author visit that they had in um recent memory.
00:04:50.879 --> 00:04:51.120
Wow.
00:04:51.360 --> 00:04:58.800
And um we were able to find um people to donate so that each student could have a copy of their own book.
00:04:58.959 --> 00:05:00.879
And I stayed up till three in the morning.
00:05:01.040 --> 00:05:07.040
The teacher wrote me things that they were interested in, and so I wrote an individualized note to each student.
00:05:07.199 --> 00:05:07.519
Wow.
00:05:07.759 --> 00:05:16.560
And one student who um said that he liked to fix cars after my visit, he wrote me and he said, Miss Hackle, I will fix your car anytime.
00:05:16.720 --> 00:05:17.759
And I was like, okay.
00:05:18.079 --> 00:05:19.680
It's like, all right, I've made an impact.
00:05:20.079 --> 00:05:21.600
Oh, that is so awesome.
00:05:21.839 --> 00:05:28.000
Um, is there anything uh you can share with uh the audience about where they can get SmackDab?
00:05:28.480 --> 00:05:28.720
Sure.
00:05:28.879 --> 00:05:32.480
Well, Gigi's book is uh is here at NCRA.
00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:38.160
Um SmackDab is published by Brandom House Taylor Link Adventures, so it's available wherever books are sold.
00:05:38.480 --> 00:05:41.360
It is a I'd love to support independent bookstores.
00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:47.439
It is also available online, and many independent bookstores have a way that you can also buy it online.
00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:52.480
Um and you can also check out my website uh with links to my local bookstore.
00:05:52.800 --> 00:05:53.680

00:05:53.920 --> 00:05:55.360
Okay, um, that's great.
00:05:55.439 --> 00:05:58.399
What is the um what is the uh what is the address for your website?
00:05:58.720 --> 00:06:06.000
Sure, it's uh www.johackle.com, and there's no e in either the Joe or the Hackle.
00:06:06.639 --> 00:06:07.279
Perfect.
00:06:07.439 --> 00:06:08.879
